2001 Award
In 2001 John Mayer received The prestigious ASCAP Foundation Sammy Cahn Award[1]. The award is given each year to a promising lyricist from The ASCAP Foundation Songwriter Workshop Series [2] who is selected by a distinguished group of songwriters. The award was created to commemorate the life and career of the late lyricist Sammy Cahn [3] .

John Mayer is NOT a baritone; he is a tenor (voice style under bio pic).

This article is written like a story, essay or magazine article which is not an appropriate tone for an encyclopedia. This ofter happens when an article is edited by fans. And that's OK, I appreciate the work others have put into the article. At the same time it's now appropriate to begun editing it to remove the 'creative writing' and editorializing in the text. I will begin this process soon but wanted to give a chance for discussion since I see this is a protected and possibly contentious article. Here are some examples from the lead in bold that need to be either be quoted from a source or taken out
- John Clayton Mayer (pronounced /ˈmeɪ.ər/ MAY-ər;[2] born October 16, 1977) is an American musician. Originally from Connecticut[clarification needed], he attended Berklee College of Music before moving to Atlanta, Georgia in 1997, where he refined his skills and gained a following. His first two studio albums, Room for Squares and Heavier Things, did well commercially, achieving multi-platinum status. In 2003, he won a Best Male Pop Vocal Performance Grammy Award for "Your Body Is a Wonderland".-- — Kbob • Talk • 22:37, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
- I really appreciate you taking this to the talk page so it can be hashed out civilly. That said, I have no problem with individual qualms here and there; as an article expands, refinement will be necessary. But putting an article tag on a featured article for verbiage that has been approved by the Feature Article committee creates two problems: (1) it suggests that one editor knows better than the consensus of the body of editors that FA checked the article and (2) it diminishes the value of the FA distinction. Tagging an entire FA article should be a last resort for articles that have really deviated from the standard it had at its approval, and I think it is safe to say this article has not. The lead section is virtually unchanged except for a mention of his album that came out in November and the addition of another last sentence. In addressing the portions you have bolded: How can the fact that he is from Connecticut be clarified anymore? All FA bio lead sections mention three things in the first couple sentences: the full name, the birth date and the place of origin. Also, the two other portions you bolded are in keeping with this policy, as quoted from WP:LEAD: "The lead must conform to verifiability and other policies. The verifiability policy advises that material that is challenged or likely to be challenged, and quotations, should be cited. Because the lead will usually repeat information also in the body, editors should balance the desire to avoid redundant citations in the lead with the desire to aid readers in locating sources for challengeable material." Because of this fact, most lead sections have few to no references except for contentious information (like sexual orientation, criminal convictions, etc...) and quotes. Fewer citations are done on the standard that any assertion in the lead section will be correctly cited in the body of the article. You will find that is the case with both portions that you bolded. They are amply referenced...how well he has done commercially is abundantly referenced throughout the article and the fact that he "refined his skills and gained a following in Atlanta" is a pretty concise summary of the Early career and a portion of the Major label success sections. Both sentences were approved by the FA Committee.
To be fair, I think the Continuum era section can be tightened up some, and the Battle Studies section probably needs some expansion. Perhaps we can collaborate on these sections in days to come.--Esprit15d • talk • contribs 05:13, 3 February 2010 (UTC)- Hi Esprit, thanks for you detailed comments. I was not aware that this was an FA. Good to know. If you have a link for me to a page with that review etc, I'd be interested in looking at it and learning from it. With this in mind I am ok with the items I bolded except the "from CT" text. The problem I have is that its not specific sounds like slang. Its not an encyclopedic expression. Was he born in CT? Did he go to school there? I think it would be an improvement to the lead if it was more specific. What do you think? I would also be interested in working together on the other sections that mentioned. Again thanks for your post and I look forward to improving the article together. - Hello Kbob! Your appearance has made me take another look at the article, and I have been kind of hacking away at some of the substandard prose that has crept in by adding references, rewording, updating dated language, etc...As for the Connecticut sentence, he was born in Bridgeport, raised in Fairfield. I think that sentence was basically saying that even though he was raised in Connecticut, he went to college in Boston (which the sentence does't actually mention). If you want to reword that it's fine by me. :) Also, to answer your question, if you ever wanna see the history of a featured article, at the top of the talk page there is box called "Article Milestones" where you can find links to the FA discussion and the FA-aproved version of the article.--Esprit15d • talk • contribs 14:24, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

John Mayer Slammed for "Racist" Remarks in Playboy
John Mayer is coming under fire for comments he makes about African American women in his controversial March Playboy interview.
Asked "Do black women throw themselves at you?" Mayer, 32, replies:
"I don't think I open myself to it. My d*ck is sort of like a white supremacist. I’ve got a Benetton heart and a fu*kin’ David Duke c*ck. I'm going to start dating separately from my d*ck. …I always thought Holly Robinson Peete was gorgeous. Every white dude loved Hilary from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. And Kerry Washington. She’s super hot and she’s also white-girl crazy. Kerry Washington would break your heart like a white girl. Just all of a sudden she’d be like, ‘Yeah, I sucked his d*ck. Whatever.'"
Katheryn Russell-Brown, director of the Center for the Study of Race and Race Relathions at the University of Florida and author of The Color of Crime, tells UsMagazine.com that Mayer seems to be saying "black women are not just not his type, they're not in his class. They're beneath him." Fasltra (talk) 22:05, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
God, what a douchebag of the highest degree... he out-douches Kanye by a HUGE landslide. Imagine if Kanye made those comments about white women, all hell would break loose. Reminds me of the racist comments John Wayne made in an interview with Playboy some 30-odd years ago. Man, does that magazine bring out the inner racists in people or what? 24.189.90.68 (talk) 23:09, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
And you might wanna use a more reliable source for this: http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/wireStory?id=9800913 . 24.189.90.68 (talk) 23:34, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, ABC source is preferred. Where will this text be added? And what will it say? Things that stars do are reported in the news everyday and not all of them are appropriate for inclusion. They should be notable and given an appropriate amount of weight, keeping the big picture, ie its a bio of a persons entire life. I'm just thinking out loud here, not taking a position, yet. Any thoughts from others?-- — Kbob • Talk • 17:19, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
Well, what about his statement towards his sexual preference and black women, he said he had a "white supremacist dick", a "David Duke cock" and a "Benetton heart" [4] (I don't know WHAT the hell he's on), maybe you editors can figure all that out... 24.189.90.68 (talk) 22:22, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

John Mayer Was Poor???
I find it extremely difficult to believe that John ever pumped gas for a living for over a year. That smacks of self-made myth. Has it been verified that his promo people didn't pay off Pete at the Mobil? John says, and some of his albums and articles say, that his stepfather with whom he spent most of his childhood is none other than Richard Mayer, who is in "real life" the co-owner of MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer), and now the ex-husband of Margaret Mayer. —Preceding unsigned comment added by LisaSMA (talk • contribs) 16:46, 27 March 2010 (UTC)
- You have tons of inaccurate information. Richard Mayer was high school principal, and didn't own a studio in the world. John Mayer has never been poor a day in his life (hello, Fairfielf is stinking rich) and he pumped gas to save money for a guitar. But he was living at home with his still middle-class parents.--Esprit15d • talk • contribs 16:47, 13 July 2010

Dating and Relationship to the Media

- In addition the section title has become an overcrowded store house of info about his personal life including, dating, drug use, anxiety, interviews etc. The section needs work. Any input? or should I just reorganize it on my own?-- — Kbob • Talk • 04:21, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
- It's become so long, I think a separate article on John Mayer controversies might be in order, similar to existing articles such as Pat Robertson controversies, Controversies surrounding Robert Falcon Scott, and Controversies surrounding Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. John Mayer may be the most controversial, tabloid-headline-getting musician out there since Britney Spears or Amy Winehouse. We just need to make sure that a separate John Mayer controversies article, if we end up creating one, would be balanced enough to not read like a POV fork or an Attack page. Stonemason89 (talk) 19:27, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

Born And Raised Lead Single 'Shadow Days' Clip Posted
On February 16th 2012, John updated his blog posting the first sample of his new single 'Shadow Days'. He introduced the 60-second clip as "a clip of the first single off Born and Raised".[4] I feel this is important to update to the 'Born and Raised' section, at least temporarily, especially seeing as John gained fame as a musician and this is a big announcement pertaining to his core appeal. Please change Andrew Warde High School to Fairfield High School. John Mayer went to Fairfield High School, not Andrew Warde High School. Andrew Warde High School changed its name to Fairfield High School in about 1987. The name of the school changed again some time in about 2001 to Fairfield Warde High School. This information can be checked at the school itself in Fairfield Ct.

Pronunciation of surname
This video opens with him pronouncing his surname, as if it rhymes with the common pronunciation of "prayer" - one syllable (As far as I'm aware, that is the standard Germanic pronunciation of "Mayer", which is a Germanic name): http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/611387370c/makin-music-with-john-mayer-from-john-mayer-judd-apatow-kristen-bell-gerrybednob-ian-roberts-and-cohenobrien
The cited pronunciation appears to be from a site which has just combined separate common pronunciations of forename and surname, and assumed it is applicable to the individual.
Should the article be updated to reflect this?

Mistake in Timeline of
Under the Playboy controversy heading, it is written that he gave the interview in "April 2010" although it then goes on to say that it was published online in February 2010 in the sentence following. Furthermore, the Huffington Post article cited at the end of the "April 2010" date is an article from again, February 2010. This is confusing and I think a mistake. It should be changed to either February 2010 (the publication date) or earlier, but certainly not after. That doesn't make any sense. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.192.254.115 (talk) 12:22, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

In the personal information--this sentence appears:
"He also recently sold his apartment in New York City's SoHo neighborhood and moved to Montana following his throat surgery where he has purchased a home."
Piling prepositional phrases & relative clauses up like this is risky--the subordinate clause "where he has purchased a home," in this case, seems to be talking about throat surgery--which, of course, makes no sense. It would be more logical if you moved the clause so that it appears immediately after "Montana" and set it off with commas. Also, I am not sure what citation style is used here, but typically the citation should appear before the period. Otherwise it is hard to tell what the citation is attached to. The new sentence (and the previous one, with the citations in their correct place):
Mayer sold his home in the Los Angeles suburbs in 2011 [3][4][113]. He also recently sold his apartment in New York City's SoHo neighborhood and moved to Montana, where he has purchased a home, following his throat surgery[114].

- I've tweaked the language, let me know if you think its still a problem, not sure if I did exactly what you asked, but it seems better. As for the citation style, we place it after the period, at least in my opinion it looks a lot better that way. Monty845 00:01, 7 July 2012 (UTC)

Within the last couple months, John has been said to have recovered enough to perform on stage again. I don't have the full details on this, though. Is such news significant enough to mention in the article? Thesomeone987 (talk • contribs) 20:44, 10 February 2013(UTC)

Katy Perry
- In late 2012, it was reported in 3 News NZ that Mayer was romantically involved with pop star Katy Perry.--- Source:"Perry and Mayer 'so affectionate'". 3 News NZ. 14 November, 2012.

- The time spent between these two does not come across as significant enough to be mentioned in Wikipedia when compared to previous relationships they had before getting with one another. Thesomeone987 (talk) 21:09, 26 March 2013 (UTC)
- They dated for several months, plus he talked about it so I think it can be mentioned. His relationship with Swift, for example, did maybe last longer I don't know but he did not attend important events with her like he did with Perry, yet it is mentioned..... --Sofffie7 (talk) 08:42, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
- Significant enough or not, I just cropped his dating section, so it no longer says he "was reported in 3 News NZ" to be with her- the section now just simply says he has been with her. Hope this isn't a problem. Thesomeone987 (talk) 00:15, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
The Instruments He Plays
I'm not sure that the instruments listed under John Mayer are correct. There are multiple John Mayers, one of which plays the Clarinet. However, the instruments mentioned have no citations. After substantial research I was unable to find any information regarding his playing many of the ones listed, besides guitar, harmonica, and possibly piano. Another composer with the same name backs this idea. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Mayer_(composer) — Preceding unsigned comment added by KingViktory (talk • contribs) 18:39, 20 April 2013 (UTC)
- He is credited as also playing vibraphone, omnichord and piano on Room for Squares, and some percussion on Born and Raised. But I can't find anything to support that he plays clarinet or violin. Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 19:00, 20 April 2013 (UTC)
- Looking back through the history, flute, clarinet and violin were added with this edit by an IP in July 2011. Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 19:10, 20 April 2013 (UTC)
- I've removed clarinet and violin now; flute was already previously removed. Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 21:28, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

In May of 2013, Mayer posted on his Tumblr blog that a new record was on the way and set to be released that summer. On the post, he specifically pointed out that the new album would not be a "Born and Raised plus," but a group of songs "to bring the whole thing up to date in 2013." Through various social media outlets, Mayer made it apparent that the album was being produced by Don Was, who also produced his 5th studio album, "Born and Raised." Through studio-released pictures, some of the same members in his recent touring band were recording with Mayer in the studio (Aaron Sterling and Sean Hurley.) On his YouTube channel, Mayer started a video playlist to keep fans updated with the recording process. On May 25, 2013, Mayer confirmed that his first single, "Paper Doll," was in progress and would be finished in weeks. Currently, there is no title to the record.

- Hi IP 108 and thanks for your comments and request. As you may know WP is not a newspaper and its articles summarize at topic, they don't report every detail of a subject or a person's life. The points you have proposed seem like trivia to me and the source you have provided is not a reliable source per WP:RS. So let's wait on this. When the album is released it will get mainstream press and then we can add something to the article about it. Thanks for your contribution and your patience. I think a more recent picture of John should be used in the Infobox, instead of one from 2009. I would do it myself but I don't know how. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheFanMan30 (talk • contribs) 05:12, 22 July 2013 (UTC)

Edit Request
The following section should be edited:
Early life
John Clayton Mayer was born on October 16, 1977 in Bridgeport, Connecticut to Margaret, an English teacher, and Richard, a high school principal.[6] He grew up in Fairfield, Connecticut, the second of three children.[7] His father is Jewish, and Mayer has said that he "relat[es] to Judaism".[8] He attended Fairfield High School in Fairfield[9] although he was enrolled in the Center for Global Studies at Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk for his junior year (then known as the Center for Japanese Studies Abroad, it is a magnet program for students wanting to learn Japanese).[10]
The edit is as follows:
John Mayer was enrolled in the Center for Japanese Studies Abroad (CJSA), later renamed the Center for Global Studies, in his sophmore and junior years. He travelled to Japan in his sophmore year, and due to poor academic performance did not travel in his junior year. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.205.82.223 (talk) 06:37, 23 August 2013 (UTC)
- What is your source for that? --NeilN talk to me 06:48, 23 August 2013 (UTC)
Last Sentence in "Major label success" section does not sound correct...
This sentence: Mayer has also done endorsements, such as a Volkswagen commercial for the Beetle's guitar outlet... does not sound correct. I think Beetles refers to Beatles and not sure what Volkswagen would have to do with a Beetles guitar outlet. (Does the author really mean The Beatle's Guitar Hero game? Thanks,
Queen of California
A picture should be put up in the infobox of the artwork for the song.
New Picture
A new picture needs to be put up. The one that is there now is too old and outdated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheFanMan30 (talk • contribs) 13:34, 20 December 2013 (UTC) Put up a new picture, I'd do it myself if I knew how. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.97.106.134 (talk) 01:53, 31 January 2014 (UTC)
Reception and FA status
Why is there no Reception section (or equivalent)? It would appear to be a glaring omission in a featured article. czar ♔ 01:01, 23 April 2014 (UTC)
- Not sure, and frankly I'm skeptical as to whether this meets FA. XXSNUGGUMSXX (talk) 15:08, 1 June 2014 (UTC)
Is the Controvery section encyclopedic?
I can see that removing it entirely might be seen as being too kind to his celebrity status, but the writing seems less than encyclopedic. In particular the language used in the section - while coming directly from quotes - doesn't really add much to it. The same point could likely be made with PG13-level language and the section would be more encyclopedic at the same time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.37.139.132 (talk) 15:17, 2 January 2015 (UTC)
John's heavy involvement in the watch community
It's not worthy of its own sub-section, but a huge part of his life is dedicated to horology and he has a truly remarkable collection.
Two suggestions:
- In the sub-section 'Other Ventures', under the heading 'Writing', it should be noted that John contributes regularly to one of the most popular watch media sites, Hodinkee, and is recognised as part of the team.
- In personal life, or a section that someone thinks is more appropriate, it should be noted that he has amassed a watch collection consisting of both vintage and modern timepieces, that exceeds $20 million in value [source: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/john-mayer-in-his-own-words-20100122].
Even though I am slightly biased as I'm a watch nut myself, I believe both these additions would be relevant, with the latter being a very interesting fact for public consumption at least. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Olliesanderson (talk • contribs) 21:55, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
- I think these are some excellent suggestions. I'll include them in the article.Esprit15d • talk • contribs 17:57, 24 March 2015 (UTC)
