Jimmy the crow

[edit]

Considering that ravens look a lot like crows, esp. to the untrained eye, I always wondered if the bird's name was an ironic reference to Jim Crow. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.51.145.197 (talk) 09:22, 13 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Probably, but not in an ironic way: what we would be nowadays call racism was in those days simply part of the cultural background. The crows from the animated film Dumbo, who were characterised as African-American very much as a Stepin Fetchit-style caricature, were created like that to be funny, and suggest just that stereotype.

Sorry but it was racism then too. This whole idea of "well that's what they thought back then b/c it was "cultural" is pure bullshit. The reason that things are different NOW is because many people THEN, ESPECIALLY blacks DID NOT LIKE segregation, DID NOT LIKE characterizations like "Stepin Fetchit" to depict blacks on-screen and the entire Civil Rights Movement was about changing ALL THAT! The Civil Rights Movement wasn't created from a vacuum or some ephemeral idea that it would be "a good thing to do". It came out of the harsh reality that all blacks in the United States experienced, regardless. It came out of a NEED TO CHANGE THINGS! If you don't get that then you need to read, "Parting The Waters" by Taylor Branch. 47.138.89.140 (talk) 10:36, 20 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

1000 films?

[edit]

IMDB says 28. The citation is a dead link. 174.251.208.136 (talk) 19:44, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I've updated the citation, and added the "reported to" qualifier since the reliability of a 1950 newspaper is maybe imperfect. Considering the timeframe where the raven was in movies, I would not be surprised if it was in far more movies than IMDB lists, but I would also not be surprised if the newspaper is reporting a number that's higher than reality.
