High Sheriff of Fermanagh seems not to be consistent with the ODNB story, where the stabbed sheriff is Sir John Wemyss. There is a paper The Trials of Bishop Spottiswood 1620-40 by Gillespie, and Sir William Cole there is called justice of the peace. So there is something to investigate here.
