Election and appointment
[edit]I have referred to Taylor as having been elected in July, because Lowe's book (and a decades earlier book I also found in a local Northern Virginia reference room yesterday), both seem to say so. However, the relevant pages really seem to focus on other issues. I suspect the election was in November, months after the new state Constitution was adopted by voters, but have too much personal business to attend to to drive down to Richmond and consult newspapers, etc. Also, I don't think the candidates in the 1869 election necessarily ran as Republicans or Democrats; in the 1880s, this Taylor may have run as a Republican or Readjuster. Rather than spend more time on this article, I may start one on his opponent/predecessor/successor in the 1880s, William Munford Ellis, definitely of the First Families of Virginia. Other issues: I don't know whether James C. Taylor was mustered out in September 1862 because of his age, wounds or because local authorities didn't want to risk leaving his mother without sons after his younger brother's death that summer and deployment of the 3 remaining brothers. Plus, I know the numbers of siblings and children don't match the total given by sources, and hope someone has the time to trace the census data or a local source for children who died young or left the state. In any event, sorry I set up this talk page incorrectly. I hope others will find this start useful nonetheless.Jweaver28 (talk) 14:53, 13 May 2017 (UTC)
