Name
[edit]Both on Google Scholar as well as Google Books, gives "Jacobi-Anger expansion" much more hits than "Jacobi-Anger identity". In accordance with WP:NAME I moved the article to the more-used name. Further, an "en dash" is used to connect the names, in accordance with WP:DASH. -- Crowsnest (talk) 14:05, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
Relabelling z and theta
[edit]This is an expansion of a plane wave in a series of cylindrical waves. Why are we using the variable "z" for the distance from axis, and "theta" for the azimuthal angle? That seems a bit misleading. Shouldn't we be following ISO 31-11 and write it as "rho" and "phi"?
I know there's a few sources where "z" and "theta" are used, but there's also books using the ISO standard, like Arfken, Weber and Harris, 7th ed. p.655.
Let me know what you think, I'm happy to change it... Monsterman222 (talk) 19:17, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
Applications
[edit]1. A phase grating spatially modulates the phase of a plane wave. JA expansion can be used to derive the far-field pattern resulting from phase modulation, as an expansion of Bessel functions. When all but the lowest-order Bessel function are ignored, the far-field diffraction is identical to that of an amplitude grating with the same period. 162.246.139.210 (talk) 23:14, 18 March 2024 (UTC)
