Jack Northrop

[edit]

For anyone that needs a good article on John "Jack" Knudsen Northrop, I have an excellent reference. Go to: <http://www.afa.org/magazine/oct2005/1005northrop.asp>. This is an article from Air Force magazine(October 2005, vol. 88, no. 10) written by Walter J. Boyne. Boyne covers Northrop's career in aviation innovation from beginning to end quite thoroughly. I highly recommend it.

School?

[edit]

Should it be noted that there's a school in Lancaster California named after him?--Vercalos 00:03, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Journal footnote

[edit]

@DocWatson42: In the Jack Northrop article, using the template in an unstandard manner ("ID" instead of "Publisher"), I wanted the Vol, Number and Pages to be immediately adjacent to the name of the Journal, like so:

Acquisition Review Quarterly. Lessons Learned. 8 (3): 197–219.

Using the template as designed (Publisher), gives (in full):

Baker, Bud (Fall 2001). "Clipped Wings: The Death of Jack Northrop's Flying Wing Bombers" (PDF). Acquisition Review Quarterly. Lessons Learned. Defense Acquisition University. 8 (3): 197–219. Retrieved 18 February 2019

That makes it appear as though the Vol (8), Number (3) and page numbers are referring to the Defense Acquisition University, instead of the actual Journal. The DAU is merely the website receptacle for the document; it doesn't have Volumes and Numbers. I suppose this is not the only case of such display. Thoughts? DonFB: In that case "Defense Acquisition University" should be in the "|via=" field, which will append it to the end of the reference (and "Lessons Learned" should be in the "department" field):
Baker, Bud (Fall 2001). "Clipped Wings: The Death of Jack Northrop's Flying Wing Bombers" (PDF). Lessons Learned. Acquisition Review Quarterly. 8 (3): 197–219. ISSN 1087-3112. Retrieved 19 February 2019 – via Defense Acquisition University.
{{cite journal |last1=Baker |first1=Bud |date=Fall 2001 |title=Clipped Wings: The Death of Jack Northrop's Flying Wing Bombers |url=https://www.dau.mil/library/arj/ARJ/arq2001/Baker.pdf |format=PDF |department=Lessons Learned |journal=Acquisition Review Quarterly |volume=8 |issue=3 |pages=197–219 |issn=1087-3112 |access-date=19 February 2019 |via=Defense Acquisition University}}
I've also added the ISSN, arranged the fields in the order of their appearance to facilitate future editing, and changed a hyphen to an en dash. When I use the "department" field I like to add a clarifying parenthetical comment, such as "(column)" or "(story series)". Since "Defense Acquisition University" is an organization rather than a publication or other "work", I hold that it should not be italicized. —DocWatson42 (talk) 07:58, 19 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks; revised. DonFB (talk) 09:17, 19 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
