iBeacon is not a physical product. It is part of Apple's iOS 7 mobile device operating system. iBeacon is a collection of protocols that tells the device what to do with incoming BLE signals, and it also allows the device to wake up any apps to which that signal is relevant.
The article claims that iBeacons are the same thing as BLE beacons, which is false. Although they have similar names, iBeacon and BLE beacons are different things. BLE beacons are wireless transmitters that send out BLE signals within an approximately 200-foot radius.
Suggested correction: Update the iBeacon article to be factually correct, and make a second article for BLE beacons that is also factually correct.

There are other sources that can confirm this information. The iBeacon = beacon misconception is very common given the non-expert coverage from the business media, and it's very important that Wikipedia be factually correct in addressing each thing.

You are completely right about this iBeacon Bluetooth beacon misconception. I am planning to create a new article called "Bluetooth Low Energy Beacons" which includes the non Apple specific information from this article. In addition I will adding sections about the Apple iBeacon protocol as well as some other open-source ones. TeaglesCS (talk) 16:50, 23 March 2016 (UTC)
Add a catalogue of iBeacon proximity UUIDs to external links?
[edit]Hello, I and my colleagues created a (non-profit, free to use and available to anyone) catalogue of so called "proximity UUIDs" that are used to distinguish between iBeacon regions. Having a globally unique proximity UUID is beneficiary for the iBeacon ecosystem and will help avoiding chaos while deploying many iBeacon devices. Do you think linking the service (see http://openuuid.net/) is over the line, or does it add some value to the iBeacon article? I attempted to add the link manually but it was twice removed by the same one person in "do not promote yourself" rush. Point taken - lets discuss this in broader audience:). I simply believe that the link is in alignment with the Wikipedia guidelines and does add value to the article...

Add precision when used for navigation
[edit]With iBeacon triangulation, how precise is this technology for indoor navigation? Maybe indoor navigation needs to be added as a category as well!? -- THANKS Michael Janich (talk) 07:32, 23 April 2015 (UTC)
Privacy
[edit]Glaring important section completely missing!
There are a number of service companies selling shops and businesses with the promise of tracking who's coming in and of of their door using this technology. There's a banking app that triggers your photo and bank details to display on the tellers screen as soon as you walk up to them, for example. That's kindof maybe a good idea for a bank, but it's crazy creepy and privacy invasive as well...
Contradictory statements
[edit]Only one of these could possibly be true:
" the broadcasting device (beacon) is only a 1-way transmitter "
" Receiving devices can also connect to the iBeacons ... "
If software can connect, that requires 2-way communications, and once that's established, everything mentioned about "not tracking customers" becomes untrue as well.
Edit Comparable technologies
[edit]Several BLE beacons are added. For example AltBeacon is missing ;)
Could you update this section and add a link to Bluetooth low energy beacons ? Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pyrog (talk • contribs) 11:15, 30 April 2016 (UTC)
