Definition of Highway system
[edit]The lead sentence to this article doesn't specify its definition of Highway system - it only links to the highway article.
Now, in that article "A highway is any public road or other public way on land. It is used for major roads, but also includes other public roads and public tracks: It is not an equivalent term to freeway (motorway), or a translation for autobahn, autoroute, etc."
But on the Highway (disambiguation) page, it says: Highway usually refers to a long road, giving a relatively fast connection between two places.
It is my impression that the majority of country sections in this article use the latter interpretation, and it's not unlikely that that was also the intention. Nevertheless, I think a clearer demarcation of what the article is about, is desired. Possibly even moving the page..
If the definition in accordance to the highway article is followed, the clearest name for it (I think), would be "Road systems by country".
But if the definition from the highway disambiguation page is intended, I would think more of "Main highway systems by country". -- 84.106.90.249 (talk) 13:09, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
- The "highway" term can be confusing, I agree. For example, many states in the US use the former definition in their state laws pertaining to vehicles. However, I believe most people in the US think of highways as the latter definition, and especially those facilities that are signed with some sort of route marker sign (Interstates, US Routes, state highways, etc.). So maybe the second definition is best...? -- LJ ↗ 14:24, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
