Name
[edit]Irish-Dutch-Scandinavian-Germans and not British visitors...All Brits go to Malia actually ;-) (veteran of the greek isles) I saw this page was moved from Chersonissos to Hersonissos last April. This may be a legitimate move, but "wrong name" is not a strong argument. Let's see what's the English usage for this town's name:
- Encyclopedias: not in online Britannica, not in Columbia, "Khersonisos" in Encarta world atlas.
- Google Books (search with "Crete" to ensure English language hits): Khersonisos 24, Khersonissos 2, Hersonissos 213, Hersonisos 334, Chersonisos 322, Chersonissos 245, Chersonesos 425, Khersonesos 65, Hersonesos 2.
- Google News (search with "Crete" to ensure English language hits): hardly any hits.
I suppose there are some other possible spellings I missed, but these seem to be the most relevant. Chersonesos, Hersonisos and Chersonisos are the most popular ones in Google Books (all with one "s" before the final "o"). The naming conventions for Greek give the following transliteration for the Greek name Χερσόνησος: Chersonisos. So, unless we can prove that a different name is commonly used in English, the name should be "Chersonisos" according to Wikipedia naming conventions. Thoughts? - Try putting Hersonissos in google [[1]] and see how results come up ! Over 1.4 Million, more proof than ever needed. This is English Wikipedia after all, as with other place names around the world, see Cologne not Koln.--Rockybiggs (talk) 16:42, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
- And Chersonisos 596,000, Chersonissos 573,000, Khersonissos 569,000, Khersonisos 614,000 and Hersonisos 1,420,000. Raw Google searches results give many false hits, for instance in French and Hungarian. I tried encyclopedias and Google Books first, since printed media are more reliable than internet (see for instance 21.5 million hits for the typo pigoen). What I'm trying to say is that there are many spellings in use in English, which makes it difficult to pick the "right" one. Markussep Talk 18:28, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
- I`ve always been aware of the spelling of Hersonissos in English, but as you say others refer to this as a different spelling i.e with Dutch nationals whom i know you use the `C`. But looking for a number of specific citations for any spelling for this small town in crete, will prove more difficult. As for raw google searches it seems searching through Hersonissos, these are english websites references etc. However the raw searches for Chersonissos seems to throw up a large number of dutch pages. I also had a look on Google earth and put in Hersonissos, Crete and google earch took me straight to the right location, however the same search for Chersonissos, Crete resulted in google earth unable to find the location. --Rockybiggs (talk) 19:37, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
- Furthermore this is also the same with the neighbouring town Stalis, in Greek it`s called Stalida and in English its called Stalis.--Rockybiggs (talk) 09:21, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
- English-language road signs in Crete refer to Chersonisos, so there is that. I was stationed there several times. Runtape (talk) 03:10, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
no this has to do with the old-fashioned name...in old-fashioned greek Stalitha (th sounds as in this that these etc-d is actually wrong for transliterating this sound)was named Stalis —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.66.47.174 (talk) 14:40, 26 January 2010 (UTC)
- And who was the first to misspell it with a double s? And why? --Yecril (talk) 22:03, 2 March 2011 (UTC)
There is an official method to convert Greek names to latin characters. It has been standardized by the greek organization of standards (ELOT). These directions are used for example in traffic signs. According to this the correct title should be: "Chersonisos" — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kantale (talk • contribs) 10:32, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
Hersonissos is quite useless for teenagers ???
[edit]The sentence "Hersonissos can be considered as mainly being for families, and is quite useless for teenagers." is utterly false. If you search Hersonissos in google images you will see that the majority of people showing up are young / teenagers. Hersonissos has many clubs, pubs and bars (check this for example). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kantale (talk • contribs) 10:07, 27 May 2013 (UTC) Moreover: "The nightlife in the city is quite remote, but on the bright side it is a quaint place ideal for relaxation." Obviously this person has never been to Hersonissos. The main street of Hersonissos (Aghias Paraskeuvis) is where the night clubs are. A simple search in google maps can validate this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kantale (talk • contribs) 10:16, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
