Labeling someone with "dissociative identity disorder" without benefit of a professional diagnosis.

This article on Gladys Osborne has the following text:

"Although psychical researchers such as Oliver Lodge were convinced she had communicated with spirits, skeptical researchers were convinced that Leonard's trance control was a case of dissociative identity disorder."

I fail to understand how a BBC journalist and freelance writer like Ruth Brandon, who it would seem, had no degree in medicine, is capable of delivering a medical diagnosis of someone who engages in Mediumship. Perhaps this sentence could be revised given the bias shown?
