Units of measure
[edit]A large number of formulae in this artcile have hard-coded numbers, but there is no mention of units of measure. For example, the camber of a curved section of road is designed by equating centrifugal force and a component of gravitational force:
- m.v²/r = m.g.sin(θ)
If the units are from a consistent set of units (eg speed in m/s, r in metres, g in m/s² or speed in ft/s, r in ft and g in ft/s²), then the equation is universal. As soon non-consistent units are introduced (eg mph or km/h), constants need ot be introduced into the equations to account for changes of units - these constants are unit-specific - an engineer working in mph will use different constants to an engineer working in km/h. The editors of the article do not have appreciated this. Furthermore, in this particular article, European stnadrds might be different to US standards (and might well differ from country to country). - I'm working on an upgrade of this page. I could use some help with road guidelines and standards other than AASHTO.
- Also, I propose moving much of the math to a separate page, and keeping this article as a general introduction to the topic. Any opinions?--Triskele Jim (talk) 01:47, 1 October 2011 (UTC)
Incomplete
[edit]How about a section on the safety effects of highway geometry?--Triskele Jim (talk) 01:18, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
- I've started a draft section on this in my sandbox. Helpful comments and suggestions are welcome.--Triskele Jim (talk) 18:13, 6 March 2012 (UTC)
In addition to curvature, cross section and other subjects should be added.--'Triskele Jim (talk) 16:28, 30 September 2011 (UTC)
