This is how they're described in the literature and I had thought that it was reasonably self-explanatory, but that was probably naïve. Neither of our articles about seafloor spreading or mid-ocean ridges explain this at all, although it's a common phenomenon. There should probably be a section added to the mid-ocean ridge article, I'll give that some thought, unless anyone else has any bright ideas about alternative wording.
