A fact from French military mission to Japan (1867–1868) appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the Did you know column on 20 September 2006. The text of the entry was as follows:
Did you know... that the French Military Mission to Japan (members pictured) of 1867 was the first Western military mission to that country, and that members of the mission participated on the rebel side to the ensuing conflict against the Meiji Restoration?
The article lists one general, four officers per branch (total 16), ten NCOs, and two private soldiers, for a grand total of 29 members, but then states that the delegation size was 15. It then lists the members... and the total comes to 17. Which number is correct? Susan Davis03:49, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have heard that the French officers “each commanded a brigade” at Hakodate, but it was my understanding most battles in the Boshin war were at the company to a few battalions in size? Is there any record of any of these officers actual service in combat? Or were they merely present at the battle? Xx wikilubberxX (talk) 16:52, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
