Fray Ezequiel creía que la guerra civil de los Mil Días fue un castigo de Dios, por los muchos amancebamientos públicos, embriaguez y pecados de la prensa, y por errores oficiales como el decreto con el que el gobierno lamentó la muerte de Luis A. Robles, "enemigo de Dios [...] propagandista de herejías [...] agente del infierno para pervertir y condenar almas". La guerra, sin embargo, tuvo la ventaja de revivir la "sana y recta aversión al liberalismo", "calentar los pechos católicos", y dar oportunidad a madres, esposas y hermanas de mandar hijos, esposos y hermanos a la santa lucha con escapularios bien colgados. Sí, la religión debe ser defendida con Remington y machete. Las páginas del obispo definen cuándo es lícito para un cura pelear con armas y aun matar, además de instrucciones más cotidianas, como el modo de detectar el grado de liberalismo del penitente en el confesionario, cómo dirigir los votos en las elecciones, cómo no llamar a Jesucristo "Tribuno del pueblo": "Todo eso suena a revolucionario, y es mucho más respetuoso y dulce llamarle... Divino Redentor de las almas".
