Religions
[edit]What are the percentages for religious and non-religious people in the town? Mccready 18:27, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
- I don't have any census data available so I'm gonna have to make a rough guess here at 35% to 40% christians ( Mainly Protestant, Reformed and Dutch Reformed ), 5% to 10% muslims ( unknown numbers regarding schools of religion ) and the remainder being other religious believes and views, but I guess that another 10% or 5% actively practices one religion or another. This sums up to about 45% to 60% religious people of various religions. But it's a guess, I only live here after all. :)
- The reason I stated it as "predominantly christian" is because of the very small numbers of the other major world religions ( very few people practising Judaism, Buddhism and Hinduism in general ), a large amount of public and private institutions and organizations with a christian background or holding christian views ( Majority of primary schools, high schools and colleges name themselves as christian schools, for example ) and the town council is largely dominated by members who identify themselves with christian political parties such as the Christen-Democratisch Appèl en the Staatskundig Gereformeerde Partij. I've got a link with exact numbers for you, but it's in Dutch without a translation available. The numbers should say enough though, you can cross-referrence the party names with the article on dutch Political parties. :: DarkLordSeth 02:20, 12 August 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for that Given that you estimate a max of 40% that would mean the majority are not christian. Would you consider a rewrite? Mccready 09:14, 12 August 2005 (UTC)
- Not really, because of the reasons stated above. Also, I've written about this town being "predominantly christian", which means that the christian religion dominates over the other religions. While I agree that this implies that christianity is a majority as well, it should be noted that it's perfectly possible for a minority to hold a dominant position. It's also a matter of perception; People that I know from other towns and cities regard Ede as predominantly christian and we're right in the middle of the dutch bible belt. So I agree with you that it's not a majority, but the christian minority still dominates nearly all aspects here. :: DarkLordSeth 03:30, 13 August 2005 (UTC)
