Rename
[edit]It might be a bit of a mouthful but renaming the article "Kingdom of the Netherlands in the Caribbean" might solve the conflicting part of the lead. — Blue-Haired Lawyer t 17:31, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
Merger proposal
[edit]I propose that Dutch Caribbean be merged into Netherlands Antilles. I think that the content in the Dutch Caribbean article can easily be explained in the context of Netherlands Antilles, and the Netherlands Antilles article is of a reasonable size that the merging of Dutch Caribbean will not cause any problems as far as article size or undue weight is concerned. History
[edit]Perhaps this article might be improved in the history section, which begins about 1815. Is there additional Spanish history to any of these islands, individually or as a designated group, (without getting too deep into the 80 years war). Indigenous history too. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 144.183.224.2 (talk) 00:16, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Dutch West Indies
[edit]Dutch West Indies redirecting here is slightly inaccurate as historically it included Suriname. While "Dutch Caribbean" is mostly used to reflect the present set-up of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, it was not a term much used either in the Netherlands or internationally during the period that Suriname was a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (1954-1975), as far as I know. - I created a draft at Draft:Dutch West Indies. You can help improve it, so it can be moved to mainspace soon. — Ætoms [talk] 11:58, 9 September 2022 (UTC)
- Are there any sources on this? The Guianas were prominent mostly for their coastal settlements so they were included in coverage of the Caribbean. Even today Suriname is part of the Caribbean Community. Caribbean and West Indies are mostly interchangeable. CMD (talk) 20:32, 9 September 2022 (UTC)
- This rewrite would be more factually accurate I feel:
- The Dutch Caribbean are the current constituent countries and special municipalities of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the Caribbean Sea. They are located in the north and south-west of the Lesser Antilles archipelago. Together with Suriname, which gained independence from the Netherlands in 1975, these territories were historically also referred to as the Dutch West Indies.
