Independent source for influential scholar quote
[edit]Re this edit, the page in question is from a university where he is teaching a summer course, so it is promotional material. It's not independent. He may well be exactly what they are saying he is, but it's not independent. Anyway! Dudley Andrew seems like a great person. JoshuSasori (talk) 05:48, 1 January 2013 (UTC)
- At worst this is borderline. Lecture series or lecturer in residence is one of honors a major academic receives, as only the top scholars get one. Since this is tied to a course, one could argue that York is trying to promote that course, but there is no indication here that it is making money off of that. And since the lectures are public and free, this is basically York fulfilling its educational mission as a public university. Yes, York might want to get people to hear the lectures, but I don't see much of a difference between York describing a distinguished guest and a film reviewer praising a film he wants people to see--and we quote the latter all the time. Also note that those at York have an interest in not engaging in hyperbole, since that can damage their academic reputation. Finally, regarding whether this is "non-independent," clearly this is neither self-published nor a promotional press release. At best, one could argue there is a conflict of interest, but I would contend that is not serious for the above reasons. WP:3PARTY also allows for some potentially COI sources: "Rather than excluding such non-independent sources from a page, it is often best to include them, with mention of how the source is connected to someone with an interest in the topic." I have thus amended the page to include this mention. Michitaro (talk) 14:42, 1 January 2013 (UTC)
