Genealogical research
[edit]He was 43 in 1949 and as the article is from early January, likely turned 44 that year meaning he was born in either 1905 or 1906 - https://www.newspapers.com/clip/97037431/evening-standard/
However, another article from December of that year says he was 45 - https://www.newspapers.com/clip/97037587/citizen/ as does another - https://www.newspapers.com/clip/97038049/derby-evening-telegraph/
I found an article from 1957 stating that Butcher was to emigrate to Australia in November 1957 - https://www.newspapers.com/clip/97037215/evening-standard/
An Australian newspaper mentions him a couple of months later, saying that he will be coaching in Melbourne - https://www.newspapers.com/clip/97037319/the-age/
I looked on FreeBMD for any birth records in 1904, 1905 and 1906, assuming that he was born in either England or Wales. There were four matches -
Donald Claud(e) born 1904 Forehoe, Norfolk
Donald George born 1905 Kingston, Middlesex
Donald Maxwell born 1906 in Loddon, Norfolk - this Donald died as an infant
Donald Keith born 1906 in Rugby, Warwickshire
I think the most likely match is Donald George Butcher. As he was 45 in 1949, that means he is deceased by now.
On Ancestry, I found a record in the England & Wales, Civil Registration Death Index, 1916-2007 which states that a Donald Butcher born 1904, died in 1976 with his death registered in Hampstead. Don Butcher played squash there for many years, so I assume he came back to the UK and passed away in 1976.
