Release section

[edit]

Hey, uh, Blu-ray didn't exist in 2004...so, how could this film have been released on Blu-ray then? Furthermore there ISN'T an official blu-ray for devdas. It doesn't exist. There's only a bootleg taiwanese version on Blu-ray, which can hardly be called an improvement over the DVD... There are a few empty listings on Blu-ray.com (the source that was put for the statement i'm complaining about) of titles that were speculated or announced that were coming and never got released, and this was one of them. the listing on blu-ray .com never got removed. any google search will tell you devdas never had a blu-ray. only a middling DVD and a streaming service release. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 152.15.113.4 (talk) 12:52, 15 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Devdas.jpg

[edit]

Image:Devdas.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 23:44, 2 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

36 crore gross

[edit]

To the Dallas-based IP editor who keeps changing the |gross= parameter to 36 crore/360 million, even if we were to use this blog you seem attached to, (which is an insufficient source per WP:UGC) you still appear to be misinterpreting the gross they report. The |gross= parameter is for worldwide gross. That figure in the blog is 61.5 crore/615 million. "Worldwide theatrical share" is irrelevant to that parameter, and to the article, really. There's nothing at MOS:FILM that encourages the addition of nett gross, share, or other micro-financial details. Budget and gross are the figures we typically care about. If you or Vibhss wish to deviate from Wikipedia's Manual of Style for Film, you'll both need to establish a local consensus. Otherwise, the content should be brought into conformity with community editing guidelines. Thanks. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 19:54, 8 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Box office gross

[edit]

Two IPs 199.67.7.33 and 12.159.30.5 are repeatedly changing box office gross citing a blog source called "Bollybusiness" and misinterpreting even that source as explained by Cyphoidbomb (talk · contribs) in above message. For the kind information of these IP users, we can't use personal or group blogs like "Bollybusiness" as sources on Wikipedia as mentioned in Wikipedia:Verifiability and WP:ICTF. These are different from newsblogs which are usually considered reliable. Besides, Box Office India along with some other sources has been agreed upon being reliable on WP:ICTF. For the IP user pointing to an BOI archive, I would like to inform him that we do have original sources of BOI which mention precisely detailed figures for Devdas[1][2] (Of course, you need to properly analyse these sources to correctly interpret them). So, we don't need to use outdated, unclear and under-detailed archive like the one you are pointing to. If you two IP users have problem with figures of original BOI sources, start a discussion on talk page of WP:ICTF with ICTF members and ask them why they have put BOI in the list of reliable sources. Devdas page got semi-protected because of your repeated vandalism and will continue to be so if you continued vandalism. Vibhss (talk) 13:16, 9 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The disambiguation page shows about a dozen different films made from this book, of which this is evidently the most successful. I realize that only a few people would understand all the languages of those movies, but I think an article (or at least a section) comparing and contrasting the different films made of Devdas would be interesting. I would not be surprised if, as if some remakes of movies in Hollywood, there were significant plot changes to give each movie its particular attraction, especially after this 2002 Hindi version appeared. Paragraph

[edit]

The major part of the movie was filmed in Mumbai, recreating early 20th-century Calcutta. Chandramukhi's kotha was constructed next to an artificial lake, to make it look like a set in Varanasi on the Ganges.[1] A temple city surrounded the set, for which inspiration was taken from the Dilwara Temples in Rajasthan.[2] For the creation of Paro's room in a haveli, 12,000 pieces of stained glass were used.[3][4][5]

At the time of its release, Devdas was one of the most expensive Bollywood films ever produced, with reported budget of ₹30 crore[4] ($10.3 million).[6] The film released worldwide on 12 July 2002. The film was a commercial success in India and abroad, becoming the highest grossing Indian film of the year. Shah Rukh Khan has bought the rights to this film under his banner, Red Chillies Entertainment.[7]

Devdas was critically acclaimed among western and Indian film critics and is considered by many critics to be one of the greatest films ever made.[8] It was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Foreign Language Film and was also India's submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It was ranked #74 in Empire magazine's "The 100 Best Films Of World Cinema" in 2010.[9] TIME magazine named Devdas as the best film of 2002 among all the movies released around the world that year.[10] The film was recently included in TIME's Top 10 Movies Of The Millennium Worldwide.[11]

The film was screened at 2002 Cannes Film Festival, and the 2002, and 2014 International Film Festival of India in the "Devdas Section" and "Celebrating Dance in Indian cinema" section respectively.[12][13] Devdas won the Filmfare Award for Best Film. The film also won five National Awards and a further 11 Filmfare Awards, breaking the record of 10 wins previously held by Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995). --Nicholas Michael Halim (talk) 03:04, 5 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Devdas grossed 68.19 crore in India and $6.5 million (₹31.68 crore) in other countries, for a worldwide total of ₹99.87 crore, according to Box Office India,[14] excluding China.[15] The film had an extraordinary opening worldwide and recorded highest opening weekend and week of the year with collections of ₹19.83 crore[16] and ₹33.45 crore respectively.[17] It was the highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2002 worldwide.[18]

It opened on Friday, 12 July 2002, across 325 screens, and grossed the highest opening-day of the year with figure of ₹2.09 crore nett.[19] It became the second film to gross ₹2 crore nett opening day after Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.... It also had highest opening weekend and week of the year with collections of ₹6.15 crore nett[20] and ₹11.78 crore nett respectively.[21] The film earned a total of ₹41.65 crore nett.[14] It was the highest-grossing film of 2002 in India.[22]

It had an opening weekend of $2 million (9.75 crore)[23] and went on to gross $2.9 million (14.13 crore) in its first week.[24] The film earned a total of $6.5 million (31.68 crore).[14] Overseas, it was the highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2002.[25] In China, the film later grossed CN¥2.75 million ($426,357) at the box office.[26] --Nicholas Michael Halim (talk) 05:33, 21 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
