Confederate Department of the Gulf

[edit]

I am a big fan of the Eicher/Eicher book, but I think here they made a mistake: On July 25, 1863, the department/district was transferred to the Department of Mississippi and Eastern Louisiana. It remained in that department only until January 28, 1864, when it was transferred to the Department of Alabama and Eastern Mississippi.

The District of the Gulf was made a separate Department on June 8, 1863 and then became part of the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and Eastern Louisiana on April 6, 1864. Curiously, the order creating the independent department was revoked on April 6, 1864, with the revocation taking effect from August 12, 1863. So de facto, the department was independent from June 1863 to April 1864, whereas ex post its independence ended on August 12. OR Serie 1, Vol 26, Part 2, p. 40. The date of extension to 33° North was also wrong, but this looks like a simple typo and I have changed and referenced it. I am a bit less sure what to do regarding my point above. SEM (talk) 10:04, 26 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
