Rules of the road

Enthusiasm is welcome at Wikipedia but just like a first time automobile driver, familiarity with and adherence to the rules of the road, are prerequisites. We are not allowed to change the titles of citations, nor to misspell the names of the articles' subjects or add unsourced text, just as we can't drive on the wrong side of the road. Reservations

The president of the Navajo Nation just said on CNN that Haaland grew up on Native American reservations, but I'm not sure if that's true. Can this be clarified in the article? If she grew up off the reservation, did she frequently visit the reservations of her mother and other friends or family members, spend time there, vacations, etc.? 173.88.246.138 (talk) 19:33, 19 December 2020 (UTC)

Presiding over House of Representatives

Presiding over the House of Representatives is a task largely given to new members on rotation. Therefore, I don't think it's particularly notable that Haaland was the first Native American woman to preside. That simply comes from her being one of the first two Native American women elected to the body. I'm not removing it for now because I am certain more can be said about her tenure. Once that section is filled out a bit more, I may remove this bit of trivia unless others disagree. Knope7 (talk) 01:54, 19 January 2021 (UTC)

I think it is noteworthy because the WP:RS treated it as such. Plus, freshmen don't usually do much otherwise. I'm not sure how much else there is to add to her House tenure section, especially if she is resigning soon. – Muboshgu (talk) 02:18, 19 January 2021 (UTC)

The Hill and Bustle aren't the most impressive sources. I think USA Today also did a story on it. From what I can tell, places like NYT, CNN, CBS didn't really pick it up. I would like to find the time to go through and look for other sources to help fill out other aspects of her short tenure. It's true first term reps don't have much power, but they can co-sponsor legislation and do take votes. Looking at her website for what she has supported is a good place to start (although obviously what her office was most proud of shouldn't be determinative). Knope7 (talk) 02:33, 16 March 2021 (UTC)

Fair point. I had thought it had coverage in more pubs than I can see in a cursory search. The Hill is okay, and USA Today is good, and it was covered in her hometown ABQ Journal, but those other national outlets didn't seem to. The University of New Mexico Law School offers a Specialization in Indian Law, not "Indigenous law." Reliable sources, including CBS and the BBC, also refer to her legal specialization as "Indian law." KidAd • SPEAK 21:56, 17 March 2021 (UTC)

Haaland says she is a 35th generation New Mexican. I am not sure that she has written evidence for this. She is also about a 1,000th generation American and a 1,001th generation Siberian. She is also about half Norwegian.
