Writing Quality
[edit]The quality of the writing in this article is quite poor. There is too much focus on Kingman as a third baseman with the Giants and Mets, and the style in much of the article is much too informal. I don't have time to edit it, but someone should.
"Pre Steroid Days" is unnecessary
[edit]To Wahkeenah, what exactly is "personal opinion" about the fact that "pre steroid days" is an unnecessary inclusion? Do we add this to the page of every player who played before the mid 1980s?
The inclusion of the phrase adds nothing to the article. It doesn't change the fact that he was a great slugger. It doesn't change the fact that he had a big, looping, powerful swing. It does nothing for the article.
It is a POV statement which passive-aggressively derides the 'steroid era' by yearning for "the halcyon days of old." It has no place in an encyclopedia. Jwadeg 17:47, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
- This time you kept the part about where his power came from, and also actually explained yourself, so we're good. Wahkeenah 17:52, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
Censored Lasorda Quote
[edit]On Lasorda's page, it's printed without a bunch of "BLEEP"s. Although it is obvious to me, I wonder if someone would read the quotation and think he actually said "bleep" a bunch of times...
Is there a policy against swear words in quotations? Venicemenace 7/7/06
- I don't think so, but it's much funnier with all the BEEPs in place. However, it's probably more effective when heard than when read. Wahkeenah 06:01, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
Wow, I disagree. Why don't all comedies bleep out the swear words then? Swear words are funny. Venicemenace 7/9/06
- They can be. Wahkeenah 04:20, 10 July 2006 (UTC)
Two remarkable at bats
[edit]"He also had two remarkable at-bats in this period which didn't result in HRs, but nonetheless added to his legend: in a 1984 game in Minnesota, he hit a pop-up which went all the way to the roof of the Metrodome, but stuck there (for a ground rule double); and in a 1985 game in Seattle, he hit a tremendous drive to left field which struck a speaker hanging from the roof of the Kingdome, bounced back and was caught."
He also hit the upper rim of Olympic Stadium with a foul ball, 600+ feet (Montreal) when a member of the Mets (I was watching the game). Not sure of exact context but worth adding if anyone has more facts
Third porch across Waveland
[edit]The infamous porch ball across Waveland Avenue occurred while Kingman played FOR the Cubs, NOT the Mets.
