Cristiano Ronaldo & Kim Kardashian caught under media spotlight

Bhaijan81 (talk) 07:32, 19 April 2010 (UTC) Real Madrid star footballer Cristiano Ronaldo and Playboy model Kim Kardashian were seen together in Madrid, The Daily Sun reported the story. The news came only a few days after Real Madrid lost an important El Clasico match against Barcelona. Cristiano Ronaldo & Kim Kardashian caught in spotlight

Mistake

On Cristiano Ronaldo's goals section, it says he scored 22 goals for Portugal in his career. He actually scored 23 goals for Portugal. He scored twice in the 2006 World Cup in Germany, both being on penatly kicks. If you check on FIFA.com under the 2006 World Cup results for Portugal, it states that he scored a goal against Iran and a second in the penalty shootout with England. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Aznmex21 (talkcontribs) 09:19, 21 May 2010 (UTC)

Advertising campaigns - Is Wikipedia now new ad platform?

I think it is very offensive to add the "Advertising campaign" section to this article. Wikipedia is not intended to be part of the commercial interests of persons mentioned in it. The athletic successes of Cristiano Ronaldo are acceptable of course! Right now I can not edit this article. Please remove the section "Advertising campaigns" as it is irrelevant. It does seem a bit promotional, any other thought or objections to removing it as promotional? Off2riorob (talk) 15:00, 25 June 2010 (UTC)
Information given in this section may not be promotional by intent, but is actual promotional, as certain companies are mentioned in reference to Cristiano Ronaldo. This information has no long term significance about this person. The weight of this information is also not provided in similar situation of other top athletes. Cristiano Ronaldo has get a man named Peter Listerman thus instructed in Russian women. One of the ladies was Irina Shayk. Actually it was a Valeria Sokolova scheduled for Cristiano, but the English understanding is probably not working and so CR has decided to Irina. Assits Information

Assists as we all know is an important stat for any footballer. the stats are available on the ESPNSoccernet site and could be included here. I am compiling the Assists data for easier inclusion. The same can be verified in Soccernet and added.

International

National team Year Apps Goals Assists
Portugal 2003 2 0 0
2004 16 7 0
2005 10 2 0
2006 14 6 0
2007 10 5 0
2008 8 1 1
2009 7 1 0
2010 9 1 2
Total 76 23 3

Mouli106 (talk) 09:05, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

Assists are not important statistics, especially when you consider that they are open to massive interpretation. How do we define an assist? How does that stats website define an assist? Surely their definition will be different to the definition of another stats site. There's just far too much ambiguity about assists, and for that reason I recommend that this change not be made to this article. – PeeJay 10:51, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
Agreed, mostly. I think, if the league kept an official of tally of assists, then it makes sense. Or if OPTA stats were widely and easily accessible. Failing that, I think it fails either WP:V or WP:NOR. Mosmof (talk) 14:07, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

Squad number change?

Would someone please provide a source for Ronaldo's squad number change?! I know Raul has left Real for Schalke, which leaves the #7 shirt available, but the Real Madrid website still lists Ronaldo as #9, and their club shop is still selling shirts with "Ronaldo 9" on the back, so the evidence is currently quite overwhelming. – PeeJay 21:10, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

Although Ronaldo's profile on the Real Madrid website still has him listed as #9, there's a picture of a "Ronaldo 7" jersey on the page and the club shop page has now been updated to show him as being 7 with Benzema as 9. This wouldn't be the first time that new squad numbers were revealed via a club shop, so it seems certain now that Ronaldo will wear 7 this season.

92.30.156.191 (talk) 14:11, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

Cristiano played his first game on 4 August and was wearing the "7", also, Karim Benzema was wearing the 9. If you take a look now wikipedia shows that two real madrid players have the "9" jersey :) Great. XavierHD (talk) 22:01, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

No, Ronaldos goal count is based on lfp.es which is the official governing body of the spanish league to whom the referees report the goal scorers. Marca has its own method of counting goals and is only used for their piichi award, it is not an officila award and neither is their bloated goal count!

Total games played and goals scored in Club career is wrong. As of today, April 21, 2011, CR. Ronaldo has scored 75 goals from 82 appearances for Real Madrid. The wiki is showing 74 goals from 81 appearances.

Also total goal scored by him in his Manchester United career is shown as 118 whereas this is also wrong. It should be 128. Sum up the values. You will find what is wrong in both the cases.

this liner note is incorrectly written

Excludes 1 goal scored on 18 September 2010 away to Real Sociedad, which some sources attribute to Pepe while others attribute it to Ronaldo, including Marca who awards the Pichichi trophy

The goal in question is officially given to Pepe (see lfp.es), the only source attributing it to Ronaldo is Marca for their pichichi award (an award itself only recognized by Marca). This is thus a phantom goal that only exists in the fantasy of Marca editors. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.145.72.164 (talk) 06:22, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

A suggestion for complementary updated info on Ronaldo

Hello,

I'm the administrator of a Cristiano Ronaldo website (www.ronaldo7.net), on which I've been working and submitting news articles almost on a daily basis since last November. I honestly believe it may be a valuable source to be pointed from here, as it may add value to any visitor's experience that passes by wikipedia looking for information on Cristiano Ronaldo. I try to offer a wide variety of information on Ronaldo, from a simple biography where I'm putting my best efforts to manually translate it to several languages (I got it done into English and Portuguese so far), to full season stats, game photos and a very complete news articles database. I've written more than 200 news articles related to Cristiano Ronaldo since November '2010. One thing I've always been doing since I also regard it as a "must" is always quoting my sources references whenever I submit any news article. I'm Portuguese and my English typing skills are still far from perfect, but I'm attempting to improve on that as I keep working on this project. Any possibility for an editor to point a link reference to my website or a particular section of it would be highly appreciated. If there's any other information you may need from my side, I'll be at your disposal.

Thanks in advance,

Honours

I have added, or at least tried to add, two national team achievements by Ronaldo which include runner-up at Euro 2004 and fourth place at the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Including national team achievements that aren't exclusively first place on a football player's article, is not out of the ordinary. To the contrary, I would say that this article not including these achievements is what's out of the ordinary. Adding that information does not violate the guidelines of WP:WPF and the only counterargument brought up thus far by user PeeJay2K3 on the revision history of Ronaldo, is that they're not first place accomplishments. Just to give you an idea of how common these national team, non-first place, mentions are, here are just some high profile articles which include just that. Georgiamode01 (talk) 21:36, 30 July 2011 (UTC)

First of all, I never said it violated guidelines; I said it went against a consensus agreed upon by members. Second, according to WP:WAX, just because something is included on another page doesn't mean it should be included on this one. I could just as easily show you a plethora of articles that don't include second-, third- and fourth-place 'honours'. But anyway, that's beside the point; the real reason why we shouldn't include these is because you don't actually win anything for coming second, third or fourth. Sometimes the runners-up get a silver medal, and even more rarely does the third-placed team get a bronze medal, but on the whole, those achievements are nothing compared to actually winning something. After all, I've never seen a second-place trophy on display in the trophy room in the Manchester United F.C. museum. – PeeJay 21:44, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
The reason that I mentioned those articles is because there doesn't seem to be any controversy there with regards to those achievements, yet it's present here? I read through the discussions both on WP:WPF and the "Player articles" manual of style page and did not catch your reference. Care to show me where this consensus, concerning this argument, is at? Also, if you're going to make a semantics argument, picking out a narrow definition and claiming that as the be all, end all is not going to help when most dictionaries will not support that. The argument could easily be made that simply reaching the final four gives you at least a fourth place win. A win nonetheless.Georgiamode01 (talk) 22:08, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
It may not have been discussed on the WikiProject's talk page itself, but this is certainly a convention that long-serving Project members have never had a problem with in the past. Perhaps it should be brought up at WT:FOOTY instead of here in order to create a more formal consensus. Please, do the honours. – PeeJay 22:39, 30 July 2011 (UTC)

Ronaldo's assists for his country

I've done a bit of research and want to add Ronaldo's assists for Portugal ever since he started to play for "Selecção":

2004 (6): Russia 0-2 Portugal (Euro 2004) - 2nd goal; Latvia 0-2 Portugal (WC 2006 qualifying) - 2nd goal; Portugal 4-0 Estonia (WC 2006 qualifying) - 2nd and 4th goals; Liechtenstein 2-2 Portugal (WC 2006 qualifying) - 1st goal; Portugal 7-1 Russia (WC 2006 qualifying) - 1st goal;

2005 (1): Portugal 2-1 Liechtenstein (WC 2006 qualifying) - 1st goal;

2006 (2): Saudi Arabia 0-3 Portugal (Friendly) - 2nd goal; Portugal 3-0 Azerbaijan (Euro 2008 qualifying) - 2nd goal;

2007 (0)

2008 (2): Czech Republic 1-3 Portugal (Euro 2008) - 3rd goal; Portugal 2-3 Germany (Euro 2008) - 1st goal;

2009 (1): Portugal 3-0 Hungary (WC 2010 qualifying) - 1st goal;

2010 (7): Portugal 2-0 China (Friendly) - 1st goal; Portugal 3-1 Cameroon (Friendly) - 3rd goal; Mozambique 0-3 Portugal (Friendly) - 3rd goal; Portugal 7-0 North Korea (WC 2010) - 4th goal; Portugal 3-1 Denmark (Euro 2012 qualifying) - 1st goal; Iceland 1-3 Portugal (Euro 2012 qualifying) - 3rd goal; Portugal 4-0 Spain (Friendly) - 1st goal;

2011 (1): Cyprus 0-4 Portugal (Euro 2012 qualifying) - 3rd goal Tarts2 (talk) 12:41, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

First of all, how do you define an "assist"? Last pass? Last meaningful contribution? Last touch of the ball? Every source has different interpretations, so there's the first stumbling block. Second, WP:FOOTY is against the addition of assists to stats boxes anyway. – PeeJay 13:04, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
Well, first, as defined in this Wiki, as the last pass before the finishing touch is given, so ocassions where a player passes the ball, the eventual goalscorer controls the ball and THEN scores are not counted. Also, when the player who gives an assist makes a shot, it's saved by the goalkeeper and the assisted player scores. That counts as an assist too. Tarts2 (talk) 13:14, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
I have never seen such a definition given on this Wikipedia. Where did you find it? – PeeJay 14:21, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
Search "Assist (football)" in Wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tarts2 (talkcontribs) 14:25, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
Wikipedia cannot be a reference for itself. If you want to add assists data to this page (which WP:FOOTY would still not support), you will have to find independent statistical analysis. Simply observing matches and applying your own definition of an assist would be a violation of WP:OR. – PeeJay 14:31, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
Fine then, I just thought I would contribute a bit. But since it's such a controversial subject, I'll drop it. Tarts2 (talk) 14:34, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
It's not controversial, just unverifiable and too open to interpretation. No need to be passive aggressive about it. Mosmof (talk) 04:25, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

Ronaldo's real height

Ronaldo's height is actually 185.1cm, not 186cm. Proof is in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7vYfKfI87U. See 10:55. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.189.17.169 (talk) 03:55, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

Height is the sort of thing where reporting can be so unreliable that "proving" someone's height, at least to Wikipedia's level of verifiability is impossible and pointless. Better to go with the officially listed measurements. --Mosmof (talk) 04:22, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

No, in this case that is his actual height. It's a state of the art 3D laser scanner. It measures every single part of his body. It has his wrist girth, upper, mid and lower arms/calves, neck, chest etc, all to the mm. It will be exactly accurate on height - possibly the most accurate height read out you could ever get, and it's on TV. Not changing it is ridiculous. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.114.88.251 (talk) 13:49, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Yes the method of measurement is accurate but it's impossible to know whether that's his absolute actual height as height varies throughout the day. Taken from the human height article: "The height of each person can change in the short-term depending on factors such as the amount of exercise done directly before measurement, or the time elapsed since lying down for a significant period of time." A measurement by the scanner later in the day and after doing exercise will give a lower height than a measurement made right after waking up. El0i (talk) 20:11, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Number of goals and appearances in Real Madrid

Hey everyone. I just noted that the number of goals and appearances CR7 has had in Real Madrid aren't updated - it says something with with 70 goals in 75, when it is really is about 98 goals in 102 matches. 1. ESM honors aren't official awards of sanctioning bodies like FIFA or UEFA. I'm sure we can have a discussion about their notability, but I'm not sure if they're any more important than honors that don't make the list.
  2. Which Portuguese Footballer of the Year award?
  3. Assists aren't officially recorded stats. I know news organizations and stat analysis firms record assists but standards aren't consistent so the numbers aren't universal, so WP:V is going to be an issue until leagues start recording assists. --Mosmof (talk) 01:33, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

(2) Can someone add ronaldo's assists for club AND international games please?! every other major player has it! As for the person asking what defines as assist, it is the last pass before a goal, espnsoccernet.com and whoscored.com, two of the best stat sites count assists this way. The same rule has been used to count the number of assists for other players like rooney, messi, silva, giggs, villa and co for years so I see no reason why it shouldn't apply to ronaldo.

His club assists was on this page before but it was taken off for some reason. I don't know what the ESM team of the year is. European Sports Media gives no references, so that page should probably be deleted. The ESM website makes mention of a team of the month, but I don't see anything about a team of the year. The globe soccer link you gave says that the winners are Mendes, Galliani, and Gil -- no mention is made of Ronaldo other than that he "sprang a surprise by sending a double video message..." I'm not seeing that Ronaldo won anything there. As far as assists go, I see that he made six career assists, but I don't see them broken down as to when he made them (whether in the Olympics, in a regular game, etc.), which is why I haven't added them to the article. Besides, it's only six assists, not very much -- he's no Michael Jordan. Do you know of any newspaper articles, any magazines, any news articles that talk about these things? You might want to sign your comments with four ~'s, with ~~~~ which will then be automatically replaced with your signature, so that people can more easily see who made a comment. :) Banaticus (talk) 21:12, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

First, his height. There's a valid reference for 186.5cm, given in the intial infobox template. Do you have a reference for this laser height test? If you do have one, then it should list both heights, since they both would presumably be valid references. As to his career assists, his career goals are broken up by clubs, Olympics, etc. Do you have a source that would break his assists up like that? Otherwise it would sort of look a little funny to have them hanging out on their own, since he only has six assists in his career. That's my opinion, at least. Wrong statment regarding Ronaldo as fastest to 100 goals

It has been reported that Ronaldo is the fastest player in la liga history to reach 100 goals (92 games), however, this is false since another player alredy did reach 100 goals faster (less games). The player in question is the Asturian Isidro Lángara (Oviedo) which reached 100 goals in only 82 games:

  • season 1933-34 18 matcher 26 goals
  • season 1934-35 22 matcher 27 goals
  • season 1935-36 21 matcher 28 goals
  • season 1946-47 20 matcher 18 goals
  • season 1947-48 scored in his first appearance on matchday 2

This gives 100 goals in 82 games — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.54.198.204 (talk) 10:23, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

how do you know this? There needs to be a reference to add this information to the article. 24.22.140.222 (talk) 09:20, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

And one more reference from the official club page Real Madrid.com la mejor marca del campeonato lograda por el jugador del Oviedo Lángara, que necesitó 82 partidos. [3]

Move the reference to the Castrol documenta-movie?

The documentary is definitely not relevant to that particular season, and most of the comments about it are uncited. It could probably be added to the intro with 'is able to score with his head and feet' as generic info about him. 24.22.140.222 (talk) 09:23, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

for clarity - I am referring to these sentences, currently under '2011-2012 season'. In the first weeks of September, Ronaldo's physical performance was subject to scrutiny by world media, after Castrol released a television film named Ronaldo: Tested to the Limit where he was put to test in several fields, including mental and physical. Conclusions from the movie and doctors in the weeks following claimed that Ronaldo was one of the best athletes in the world, excelling in football and outstanding in almost every other category.[citation needed] Several sources[weasel words] drew comparisons between him and other top athletes, including sprinter Usain Bolt.[citation needed] 24.22.140.222 (talk) 09:25, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

Ronaldo?

Why is he referred to as just "Ronaldo"? If I understand correctly, that is his middle name. I think he should be called Cristiano Ronaldo, Cristiano perhaps for short, or maybe even dos Santos (his last name). You'd never hear say, Mary-Kate Olsen as just "Kate" or John Paul Jones as just "Paul." Not only that but it leads to confusion with all of these Ronaldo_(name). The logic behind it is irrelevant. He is commonly known as "Ronaldo", end of story, albeit less commonly than he is known as "Cristiano Ronaldo". – PeeJay 02:03, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
Maybe he is "commonly known" that way, but (a) what is "common" vs. "not common"? i.e. what standard is used? (b) how do you prove that standard? For example, Lionel Messi is "commonly known" as "La Pulga", but there are no references to it in his article. That's just one exmample... he is known as "Leo Messi" not "Lionel", but the article only refers to his foundation (which is OFFICIALLY TITLED Leo Messi Foundation so there's no alternative) that way. You can say "not AS commonly known" but again, what is the standard/cut-off? I'm willing to leave it as is, I really am... but I find your response ("logic = irrelevant... end of story") completely unsatisfactory. ElAnimalSalvaje (talk) 17:34, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
If Lionel Messi is commonly referred to as "La Pulga", stick it in the article. No one is stopping you. However, the fact remains that Cristiano Ronaldo is commonly referred to as just "Ronaldo". There's no arguing that fact. It may not be his most common name, but it is a name commonly used to refer to him. – PeeJay 23:07, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
You're rather not listening. Some people call Cristiano Ronaldo "Cris"... some people call him "Gaynaldo" or whatever. There is obviously a standard besides "it's common" and there's obviously a standard to just HOW common something is and there's obviously a standard to prove that it is in fact common. Or should I go ahead and stick in any name he's ever been known as that I personally deem "common"? Further, if the only standard is that something is "common", what is to stop me from changing all the references to "Ronaldo" to "Cristiano Ronaldo", or any other "common" name I choose? There must be a logical reason why we use one sometimes and not another, or why we use one and the other not at all. And if it's not, can I just change any of the ones I personally don't like as much for ones I find more pleasing? What's to stop me if you're willing to completely throw logic out of the window in favor of ONLY abiding by a totally undefined, unmeasured yardstick? 69.244.70.13 (talk) 21:49, 12 April 2012 (UTC)
Is "Ronaldo" a common name for Cristiano Ronaldo? Yes. Is it often used by the media to refer to him? Yes. Case closed. – PeeJay 23:19, 12 April 2012 (UTC)
OK, I'm going to explain it the last time. If you don't understand, please don't say "case closed." Say "I don't understand." If you do understand please explain. I'm going to go one last time.

"Is Ronaldo a common name?" I don't know, is it? See, "common" is subjective. Is calling Ronaldo "a jerk" common? I don't know, possibly. It depends on what you mean by common. Is there some sort of poll, or study, or what? How do you determine what is "common" or not?

You have to (a) set criteria to define this subjective term and (b) prove that it does indeed meet these criteria.
The alternative is that anyone can deem anything common and insert it all over the Wiki.
Actually, I would say that the best case for using it that way is that he has worn it on his shirt (of course, many interesting nicknames are worn on the shirt and very few times would they be used. An easy example is his shirt frequently reads C. Ronaldo and I don't think we'd refer to him that way.) I think it's possible he is a person who prefers to be called by his middle name, even by his friends. Or maybe after the success of Brazilian players named Ronaldo he decided he wanted to be called that. I'm speculating, but this would be interesting to know. For the moment I have no problem with referring to him simply as "Ronaldo," I am just curious as to the reasoning (which at the moment I've gotten basically none.) 69.244.70.13 (talk) 17:00, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
I'm glad we got this settled. --Mosmof (talk) 18:18, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
