Challenging edit on 14 May 2023
[edit]I'm challenging this edit on May 14, 2023 which added a new sentence before an existing citation which is not actually supported by that citation, then inserted a citation to a source which may not be acceptable under WP:RS.
I previously added the second citation (which was already in the article) to support the preceding sentence for the proposition that the first Costco store opened on September 15, 1983 in Seattle.
The anon IP inserted a sentence before that existing citation to make it look like as if the cited article states that Costco stands for CostCompany (the article does not actually say that), then inserted the first citation before that, which links to a site which appears to be a small weblog. That first source cites no sources for its speculative claim that Costco stands for CostCompany.
I just checked several major research databases including ProQuest and Gale General OneFile (the current brand name of the old Gale InfoTrac system). Both databases include extensive news coverage from the 1980s of the early growth of Price Club and Costco. None of those articles mention that Costco was a contraction of CostCompany. Indeed, ProQuest has no mention of that term whatsoever, and InfoTrac has only four mentions, all of which are from 2020 onward, are clearly typos (i.e., corrupted article transmissions), and have nothing to do with Costco.
If anyone can supply a citation to an actual verifiable story from the 1980s (that is, verifiable on a news database or against news microfilm) in which one of the Costco founders actually said that the name stands for CostCompany, I'd be happy to stand corrected. But for now, I'm pulling that assertion and restoring the previous version of that paragraph as it stood on May 14, 2023. Coolcaesar (talk) 23:31, 25 June 2023 (UTC)

Puerto Rico
[edit]Why does it say United States and Puerto Rico as if Puerto Rico isn't apart of the United States? Other territories like Washington D.C have Costcos but I don't see 'United States, Puerto Rico and Washington D.C'. If I don't get a sufficient answer I'm going to delete all mentions that seem to separate Puerto Rico from the United States soon. Cruetresin (talk) 02:11, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- Washington, D.C. isn't a territory. It's a federal district and, obviously, the country's capital. It also has electoral votes. So Washington, D.C. doesn't really equate to Puerto Rico, which is a self-governing territory. In the lead and under the "Locations" section, the article mentions 614 locations in the United States, and it explicitly includes Puerto Rico in that number. So it isn't like the article is trying to imply that Puerto Rico is a completely separate country. But since it is a territory, not a state, it's worth noting stores in Puerto Rico. I don't know that it would be helpful to remove Puerto Rico from the article. pillowcrow 18:28, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- It's not helpful to have Puerto Rico either, what does it tell the reader? Also I don't mean to say that D.C and Puerto Rico are the same it's the fact that Puerto Rico and D.C are special territories that don't need to be listed as separate from the US. Cruetresin (talk) 09:57, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- If it's not helpful either way, then it might as well remain the same. But it tells the reader that there are stores in Puerto Rico. That's helpful because when people hear or read "United States," they're not typically thinking of Puerto Rico—just as they're not typically thinking of Guam, American Samoa, or the US Virgin Islands. Again, D.C. is not a "special territory." It's a federal district that holds electoral votes. pillowcrow 20:33, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
