Badly written
[edit]"This combination of R&B style and hip hop rhythms was termed new jack swing, and was applied to artists such as Keith Sweat, Guy, Jodeci, Bell Biv DeVoe, and the popular late 1980s/early 1990s work of Michael Jackson"
R&B style? What part of R&B style? This could mean vocals, melodies, lyrics, rhythm, percussion etc. It's not specific. It's really confusing.--148.197.5.18 18:01, 15 November 2007 (UTC)
- I'm not an expert of musical styles but to me it seems that this style has nothing to do with r&b, more like soul. Meaning it's more of a combination of soul and hip hop. 82.141.75.168 (talk) 00:14, 27 June 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry, more like what's the difference between soul and r&b? Sounds quite the same, or maybe I've been told wrong way about which music is soul and which is r&b... 82.141.73.190 (talk) 12:37, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
Good intentions, need to be rewritten with more verifications
[edit]Nice facts, probably needs to be a subcategory rather than an article. Some things aren't clear - but it does define what contemporary R&B is about. However additonal sources may need to be added.
Of the five I read regarding the genres of R&B/Soul - this is the best article so far. Brown Eyed Soul - needs plenty of work... Blue Eyed Soul - needs work.... Soul Music - Some questions need to be resolved... Rhythm & Blues - Dubious list furnished.... Contemporary R&B - Good facts - just need very little work to make it a better article.
Regarding the previous post. A way to write it would be "Hip-Hop played a greater part in shaping the rhythms of contemporary R&B beginning in the late 80's with the "New Jack Swing." Mostly a creation of producer of Teddy Riley... It found its way through hits by Michael Jackson, Bell BivDeVoe, Jodeci, Keith Sweat, Boy George, Tony! Toni! Tone!, Guy and Blackstreet.
I wonder if this would be somewhat clearer. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.36.148.232 (talk) 06:14, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
Better!
[edit]Read the article again... Very accurate... Don't see anybody questioning it...Good job with the re-write.

Adding Artist Examples under the 2000s
[edit]I think it is a good idea if use Artists who have popularity in the USA and Worldwide and have actually shaped modern R&B, so please not add people like Darin Zanyar, who is not well known or has not made any cultural impact in the genre. Caribbean1 (talk) 16:30, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
Neo soul
[edit]Are you sure Neo soul ios a fusion genre and not a sub-genre of Contemporary R&B? Netrat_msk (talk) 12:27, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Artists
[edit]Britney Spears stands out as an obvious misfit in the 2000s category - many pop singers have made songs with some R&B influence, but this does not mean that they have made any genuine impact on the genre - it is much more a case of the genre influencing them - and therefore merit inclusion. All the other singers there just now seem pretty obvious. Redemption Face (talk) 19:03, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
ADDED SWV TO BEST SELLING GROUP
[edit]I added SWV to the best selling group list, somehow people always forget to mention them. I got the reference as well, they sold 27 MILLION ALBUMS AND SINGLES together so there isn't no need to erase this. Thanks!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.5.235.140 (talk) 13:51, 23 February 2009 (UTC)
Top selling solo singers
[edit]I don't think the overview of top selling solo singers is accurate enough. Different sources are used for this overview, many of which are undated or outdated. In my opinion, sales figures can only be compared if they have the same (independent and reliable!) source. RobbertS 20:36, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
Also there are missing other singers who sold more than the others e.g. Beyoncé. And Dangerously In Love was sold over 11.000.000 times (this can be added in Top selling albums). 88.152.195.103 (talk) 21:05, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
I wouldn't even worry this list is rigged and biased, I added Beyonce and SWV with citations and they erased them. 25 March 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.209.120.7 (talk)
It has come to an edit-war. 88.152.195.103 (talk) 16:05, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
- You have yet to provide a source for Beyonce's sales. You're most recent edit attempted to mask my source for Rihanna as one for Beyonce. The Bookkeeper (of the Occult) 22:37, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
- Here are several sources. 88.152.196.144 (talk) 16:35, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
BUT EVERYONE KNOWS BEYONCE OUTSELLS RIHANNA I'M SURE YOU CAN FIND A RELIABLE SOURCE TELLING HER SALES..
AND I STILL THINK THIS PAGE IS RIGGED..
A WHOLE BUNCH OF TOP SELLING ARTISTS ARE MISSING..
LIKE YOU GUYS DIDN'T EVEN PUT ANY EFFORT INTO IT. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.248.194.242 (talk) 09:00, 3 April 2009 (UTC)
- I agree Rihanna has sold less than Beyonce, however, most sources quote her total album sales as a solo artist + her sales as a member of Destiny's Child. Its hard pressed to find a source which specifies her albums sales only as a solo artist. The Bookkeeper (of the Occult) 09:11, 3 April 2009 (UTC)
- So it must be claimed as uncomplete. 88.152.196.144 (talk) 16:44, 3 April 2009 (UTC)
- I don't have a source for her sales but im a big fan and she's sold around 54,035,000 as a solo artist. Don't expect you to add it on, just wanted to make it known, lol!! Wneedham02 (talk) 21:59, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
Removal of sales figures
[edit]I propose removing all sales tables on this article, which has been endorsed here and here. — R2 02:34, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
- I second that emotion for the blatantly incorrect and misleading information it gives. I refuse to believe that Rihanna is the 7th best selling contemporary artist, while artists like R. Kelly or Whitney Houston, Beyonce or Alicia Keys not even mentioned. The list is done on a whim, and I agree that it is totally ridiculous. Pretty soon, there will be edit wars regarding who has sold what and who should be ranked where. Orane (talk) 03:24, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
- This has already been indicated above. Almost like the article should be called "Best-selling Cont. R&B singers". Orane (talk) 03:27, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
- As I said on my talk page, the article should focus on the development of the genre itself. As long as the section was in place, I tried to keep if factual with proper sources, but I'm all for removing it altogether. Punk rock seems to be a perfect model on how the article should be shaped. The Bookkeeper (of the Occult) 03:42, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

"2000s"
[edit]I do not agree with that section. In addition to the reference not be verifiable in some countries, like Portugal, the section is written in a partial way, the user like a lot of Beyoncé, whose principal genre is pop music... Vítor&R™ (Run This F* Town!) 03h22min de 10 de Setembro de 2009 (UTC)
- First, Beyonce's principle genre is contemporary R&B, not pop - like most R&B artists, her music has crossover appeal on the popular music charts. Second, I'm certainly not a fan of Beyonce or her music. Third, the source used is verifiable by wikipedia WP:RS standards. The Bookkeeper (of the Occult) — Preceding undated comment added 02:36, 10 September 2009 (UTC)
Auto-tune
[edit]Referring to the use of auto-tune by R&B artists, the article claims Auto-tune became popular in the 80's after Zapp and Roger's single "Computer Love". Auto-tune was only developed in the late 1990s. I believe 'Computer Love' uses a vocoder. --Ef80 (talk) 18:15, 11 October 2009 (UTC)
I deleted that part and replaced it with something that makes sense. Kid Rock one was of the first artist signed to a major record label to use auto-tune on their records: It was created in 1997 if i am right and he used it in 1997/1998. Vocoder and Auto-Tune are totally two different things — Preceding unsigned comment added by LarryTheGreat (talk • contribs) 21:15, 1 December 2009 (UTC)
Article name
[edit]I'd like the sources explicitly naming all variants of modern soul/sung hip hop "contemporary R&B" to be shown. That means I'd like to see sources proving "contemporary R&B" is actually a term, not a description. My concern is that most of the times I've encountered mentions of such music, it was termed "R&B", sometimes described as "mainstream R&B" or "modern R&B" but never named with a solid "contemporary R&B" term. -- Appletangerine un (talk) 11:56, 11 December 2009 (UTC)
- Because if it's not a term but a description, some serious renamings will follow -- Appletangerine un (talk) 11:57, 11 December 2009 (UTC)
"Contemporary" R&B?
[edit]What exactly is the difference between 'contemporary r&b', 'r&b' and 'soul'? To me, they all sound somewhat same. The biggest difference I can find is the time when it was around. This should be covered somehow in the article. 82.141.127.50 (talk) 19:54, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
Rhythm and Blues, spelled out, is an earlier genre, from the fifties and stuff. Soul = heavy use of strings, falsetto vocals etc. Think Blue Magic. R&B (this article) = melisma, downtempo, drum machines, lush keyboard arrangements etc. Think Luther Vandross. 109.22.53.228 (talk) 15:16, 13 October 2016 (UTC)
It is the same as pop music
[edit]Should contemporary r&b be a genre of pop music here is my source right here, read the first comment, thanks

Added Content
[edit]I added more artists to the 2000's decade. Based upon the description of R&B and how it has evolved using newer less traditional sounds, it was clear more artists needed to be mentioned. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jamorri7 (talk • contribs) 00:44, 14 April 2016 (UTC)
1980s?
[edit]I just wanted to draw attention to the lack of a section on this period. Why are we ignoring the first major decade of the genre? Huge artists like Luther Vandross, Atlantic Starr, Howard Hewett, and Alexander O'Neal etc., along with the sound characteristic of that period have been glossed over. 109.22.53.228 (talk) 22:03, 9 October 2016 (UTC)
