African production in percentages

[edit]

It is bizarre to go on about how significant African production is, when the article for some reason uses figures for the very two years during which Australian production was practically shut down. Just let us know how many tons are produced in Africa. It makes no sense to deal with wildly fluctuating percentages which fluctuate not because anything has happened in Africa but just because production broke down in Australia.

Afaik this was a planned interval of limited duration from the start. I think Talison took advantage of the financial crisis to shut down their mining for maintenance, knowing full well that prices would rise again after a few years, so they are far better off by not producing tantalum for a year or two. So by no means has African tantalum somehow magically become more important in 2009, the reality is that Australia couldn't be bothered to produce it because it was selling too cheaply, and they are back in force as soon as prices pick up. --dab (𒁳) 11:19, 12 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting point Dbachmann. It would be interesting to also see that perspective in the article. Of course you would have to find some sources to avoid WP:ORIGINAL. You could also work it into the Coltan article. --Tobias1984 (talk) 12:16, 12 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It is believed that sufficient reserves exist in developed countries,

[edit]

removed this piece of text because I have not as yet seen anything like this in the sources. Also, evil passive tense in the sentence construction does not tell us *who* believes this. This text may be entirely correct -- I am willing to believe it, but it really really needs a citation. If it gets a reference I have no objection to the concept being returned to the page but please either restate it as "the developped countries have sufficient reserves," preferably noting how much that is, (because what is sufficient if for example american consumers all start buying electric cars or other largish batteries? Alternately, attribute it, as in provide a grammatical suject for the statement, so: "Warren Buffet said on (date) that the developped countries have sufficient reserves." (Not that he seems to have said that mind, which is my point. I have not seen ANYONE saying that.

At least that is what I think it needs -- please feel free to discuss if needed. I am going to watch the page. Ta, Elinruby (talk) 23:50, 28 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

questioned text

[edit]

"However, there are also examples of indigenous communities that obtain coltan through traditional methods which have no environmental impact,[citation needed] such as the Cubeos of the Vaupés Department in Colombia.[citation needed] This has given them strength in their autonomy and resources to live sustainably in their lands, for they have invested in sustainable food security, renewable energy sources as well as other socially and environmentally healthy projects.[citation needed]"

I find this unlikely and given all the flags I seem to not be alone in this. If true it's great news and quite relevant, so if it gets a reference I have no objection to it returning to the article. Elinruby (talk) 05:30, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
