Coffin, Gardner, Starbuck

[edit]

Of course, both Coffin and Starbuck appear in Moby Dick. By the way, Nikumaroro, in the Phoenix Islands, was formerly known as Gardner Island. I'm not certain that the Wikipedia article has assigned the correct Gardner to this island, but I would bet it is named after someone in Nantucket.Pustelnik 00:05, 22 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I'm working on the Gardner Island thing...I've got sources for both Coffin and Joshua Gardner discovering it...best to present alternatives. If it's Coffin, then he named it (apparently) after his father-in-law, so probably a Nantucket man. When I get a chance I'll finish presenting the info. Perhaps it's another case like Starbuck Island...discovered by two whalers the same year and given the same name by them both.Gwinva 02:42, 22 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
