Record high

[edit]

The 52.3C is obviously a lie. The 25 January 1989 Villa de Maria Rio Seco recorded 33.9C not 52.3C as you can see here:

http://www.tutiempo.net/en/Climate/Villa_De_Maria_Del_Rio_Seco/01-1989/872440.htm

I don t know who invented this joke, but this is very stupid and not funny joke. Wikipedia is here to inform people, not to lie, so please have your facts right before spreading lies in this encyclopedia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Maxcrc (talkcontribs) 13:28, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have changed the obviously error of higher temperature. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ezequiel15 (talkcontribs) 16:10, 10 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed the error of the record high temperature. Campo Gallo did not record 52.8 C, which is a lie; its 47.3. I prefer using the 48.9 for Rivadavia as many sources, including the World Meteorological Organization recognizes it as the highest temperature. I think the World Meteorological Organization is more reliable than the Servicio Meteorological Nacional since they can perform quality checks and have a panel of experts for doing so that SMN might have not catched. It has not been the subject of ongoing dispute and we should use it rather than self-published sources or the SMN. Ssbbplayer (talk) 02:11, 5 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Tornadoes vs tornados

[edit]

I saw this edit to the article, and was curious, so did a little investigation. According to Wiktionary, either tornadoes or tornados is acceptable as the plural form of tornado. According to Merriam-Webster on-line, [1], both are acceptable. However, a Google search shows three times as many results for tornadoes as it does for tornados, and the Wikipedia article on Tornado uses tornadoes. So, I think it should be Ssbbplayer's choice which form to use. Corinne (talk) 22:21, 21 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I would suggest using "tornados" rather than "tornadoes" just for consistency and to avoid any confusion. For example, the map is required to say "Pasiilo de los tornados" and not "Pasillo de los tornadoes" because it is the correct term in Spanish. I did a Google search and another thing I find out is that for "tornadoes", virtually all the sources are in English but when "tornados" is used, some sources are in Spanish. Unfortunately, tornado climatology is not well developed outside of USA, it is hard to say which term is better on the basis of the number of hits. Ssbbplayer (talk) 22:34, 21 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I changed it to tornados just for consistency. Both forms are correct based on the dictionary so there is no harm in using one or the other. Ssbbplayer (talk) 22:41, 21 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Nice article. Will add my comments in 24 hours. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 17:43, 1 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • In the lead:
  • Temperature, natural disasters, winds, agriculture, flooding and thunderstorm are too common to be linked.
  •  Done Finished delinking these articles.
  • You may link latitude
  •  Done
  • The Pampas Is there any particular part of the country are they located?
  •  Done Most sources include Buenos Aires Province, Córdoba Province, La Pampa Province, and Santa Fe Province (it's called "llanura pampeana" or "región pampeana" in Spanish). Entre Ríos Province is generally considered to be part of Mesopotamia (it does have a warmer climate than the Pampas) while San Luis Province is usually part of the Cuyo Region by most sources. The others are okay and should be kept since much are based on political borders with the exception of the Chaco (also called "chaqueña or región chaqueña") and the Pampas region which are natural regions. I searched up regions of Argentina and there are numerous definitions. Here, they are based on the ones that the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional uses in their monthly climate bulletins.
Thanks, I got a lot to know from this. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 11:56, 2 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • will be significantly impacted What does "will be" imply here
  • The "will be" refers to future scenarios (e.g projected changes and impacts in the next decades and century).
  • some areas receiving more and other areas receiving less --> some areas receiving more and others less>
  •  Done Finished changing to that form. Looks better, thanks for pointing that out.
  • It would be helpful if you could mention the six major regions of the country by name (from "Regional climate"). I think you already do this in the part In general, northern parts of the country are characterized by... mountainous zones can see heavy snowfall. But the addition of names would be twice as helpful.
Done Changed and modified lead sentence to include all 6 regions. First paragraph involves seasons, second one involves the 6 regions. I removed the extremes since the 2 sentence does not cut it. The featured article Climate of India does not mention record high and low in their lead. Ssbbplayer (talk) 03:09, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think the mention of seasons should precede that of the climatic regions.
Done I moved it first. Will work on mentioning the 6 major regions. Note: Although the map indicates 9 regions, disputed regions (Falkland Islands and South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands) and Argentine Antarctica are not mentioned, both the Pampas consists of the humid (wetter) Pampas and the dry Pampas while the Sierra Pampeanas, I tried my best but could not find anything for this (one or 2 sentences, mentioned in some parts).
  • There are some citations in the lead.
Done Moved citations down. Modified sentences such that the lead summarizes it. Ssbbplayer (talk) 00:41, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Please do not include citations in the lead. The facts in the lead must all be mentioned in the main text as well - the citations should thus go to the main text.
Done No text in the lead has a citation. However, I am not sure about the first map if a citation is needed or not.

Seasons

[edit]
  • Do not repeat citations in consecutive sentences. If one is the source for even a whole para, you can put it st the end of the para.
I moved the citations such that they are not repeated. It does become complicated for sentences involving 2 or more citations and I left it there to avoid it being challenged and to ensure that if vandalism occurs, it can be detected rapidly. Check to see if I did not remove any crucial citations (form an unsourced statement).
You have done a good job. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 03:29, 3 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Link Andes at first mention in the main text
Done Finished that. I moved the link for the Andes to the first one mentioned in text
  • August temperatures are normally higher than in June and July --> August temperatures are normally higher than those of June and July
  •  Done Changed sentence
  • receive the most precipitation during the winter months What does this mean? Is the precipitation maximum for this region in winter, or is the winter precipitation recorded to be maximum in this region of all?
It refers the fact that in terms of mean seasonal precipitation (in this case winter) around the country, the highest amounts are found in those respective places. I changed sentence to "The highest are in the extreme northern part of the littoral region and northwestern parts of Patagonia, where mean winter precipitation exceeds 250 mm." It is not the precipitation maximum in this region in winter but refers to that the winter precipitation recorded to be maximum in this region of all.
Alright, I tweaked it a bit. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 03:29, 3 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • between 75 to 200 mm to-->and ; Check for similar instances
Fixed this for anything if the numbers are preceded by the word "between" or some similar variants of it. Let me know if I miss some and I will be happy to fix them.
  • "Tierra del Fuego" can this be linked? Is it in the Andes?
Done Image was taken in Tierra del Fuego National Park near Ushuaia. I changed caption to indicate the specific location.
That's good, but I meant the main text where you say Tierra del Fuego and the higher altitudes of the Andes (Spring) and The mean temperature in Tierra del Fuego in the extreme south (Autumn). The link should go to Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 03:29, 3 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
After checking the source, I think they are mentioning the provinces and or regions in general that constitute Argentina (political divisions), and not the island itself. For example, they mention Neuquén, Salta, and Tucuman which refer to the provinces in general. They usually do not monitor temperatures on the Chilean side and I often see this in their climate bulletins. The better way would to say Tierra del Fuego Province rather than Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego. I changed it to Tierra del Fuego Province for clarification except for the citations where the title cannot be changed (that is what they decided on their title of the article. Ssbbplayer (talk) 00:14, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • In much of the Littoral region and most of Buenos Aires Province In "Winter", you say "littoral" but "l" is in caps in "Summer"
 Done fixed capitalization issue.
  • Duplinks: Buenos Aires Province, Littoral, Patagonia, (Summer) Cuyo (Autumn)
Fixed Buenos Aires Province, Littoral, Patagonia, and Cuyo. For the issues related to summer and autumn, does this involve any issues (I am guessing it is capitalization) since I am not sure what you meant when there were problems with these 2? Thanks.
Done Fixed so that one link only occurs in each of these terms in this page.
  • In much of the humid Pampas (Winter) Do you mean much or most? Same confusion in to 16 °C (61 °F) in much of the central parts of the country (Autumn)
I changed it to most for any sentences having this issue. I am trying to indicate that most of the region (name here) has this characteristic. Ssbbplayer (talk) 00:23, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Regional climate

[edit]
  • Way too late to link "Argentina". Should have been done at first mention
 Done Removed link to it.
  • There might be slight overlinking
  • Duplinks: Pampas, Andes,(Intro) dry season, Misiones Province,(Mesopotamia) subtropical, Köppen climate classification, humid subtropical climate, Atlantic Ocean,(Chaco) subtropical, Köppen climate classification,(Northwest) Cuyo, semi-arid climate, temperate, Zonda,(Cuyo) Pampas, temperate, Köppen climate classification,(Pampas) arid, semi-arid, Andes, Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Malvinas Current (Patagonia)
Done All of those duplinks are now limited to one per term in the page.
Well done! Sainsf <^>Talk all words 03:29, 3 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Lying between those is the Pampas region Does those refer to the regions or to the climate types?
It refers to the climate types. Ssbbplayer (talk) 00:36, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Why are months for the seasons repeated in Mesopotamia?
Done They should be deleted. I deleted them. Also changed fall to autumn which I found as well.Ssbbplayer (talk) 00:34, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Chaco is one of the few natural regions in the world What are these few "natural regions"?
The source did not define the term nor it did define the few "natural regions"; would a link be fine? I am assuming it is a geographic unit or a biome or an ecoregion so I added the link. Ssbbplayer (talk) 00:34, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • I forgot to say this. The elucidation throughout the article is indeed a masterpiece! Keep it up!

Extremes

[edit]
  • Duplinks: Salta Province, Neuquén Province
Done For the Rivadavia case, I changed so that the page appears as "Rivadavia" since the title can't be changed. That should avoid the page looking like it is overlinked. I removed both of them.
  • If there is no link for Sarimento, can you add a word to give an idea of its location?
Done I add a link to the location in the title and modified it so that it mentions which province it is located in (it is located in the middle of Chubut Province). That is the word I added to give an idea of its location. Ssbbplayer (talk) 00:04, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Natural disasters

[edit]
  • The introduction is not needed, all its facts are stated and explained in the rest of the section
 Done Removed introduction section.
  • There might be slight overlinking
Done Remove duplicate links so that one link per term on this page occurs. Ssbbplayer (talk) 03:34, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Don't add citations to captions if you already cite the same fact in the main text (which you should)
Done Remove citation and repeated text in the picture on the dust storm. Ssbbplayer (talk) 00:57, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • The sudestada ("Southeasters") Which language?
Sudestada is the Spanish language term for strong southeasterly winds. In the sources that I have used, they mention the English term (southeasters) and the corresponding Spanish term (Sudestada). I linked it as the section lacked any links to the article.
Sorry, I had to remove the link as it was linked earlier. I have changed the earlier mention a bit so that the reader knows this is Spanish for strong southeasterly winds. No troubles now. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 03:29, 3 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It looks much better too. Ssbbplayer (talk) 00:04, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Duplinks:floods, Buenos Aires Province, (Floods) soil erosion, (Droughts and dust storms) tornados, Greater Buenos Aires, Pampas, Patagonia, Andes, hail, Brazil (Tornados and severe storms)
 Done Fixed this issue.

Climate change

[edit]
  • Climate change is predicted to have  ; It is predicted that glaciers will continue to recede Predicted by whom? These may be tagged as vague if not specified.
For Climate Change is predicted to have, I know it is the government, although it implies scientists as well as they mention CIMA, which conducts and produces climatic models that scientists use. I think government and scientists is the best term to address the "whom". For the glaciers, since it is from a review article, scientists is the best term. I hope that they are no more confusing parts; if so, point them out and I will fix them. Ssbbplayer (talk) 00:53, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • There might be slight overlinking
  • that were previously too dry How long ago is "previously"?
The 2nd national communication to that the government of Argentina prepared to the United Nations about climate change indicated that they were too dry in the middle of the 20th century. I added that in. They did not provide an exact decade or year. See page 88 of the source. Ssbbplayer (talk) 03:23, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Duplinks: Climate change, Cuyo, Andes, droughts, arid, heat waves, storm surges
 Done
  • Link tropical disease.
 Done Finished doing that.
  • Note: I have done some copyediting throughout, please check the changes made by me here and ensure that I have not changed the meaning of any line. I have also removed a few more instances of overlinking.
Nice. Thanks for the additional help. It did not changed the meaning of any line after I thoroughly checked it. Ssbbplayer (talk) 00:04, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Sainsf: I have recently made all of the changes that were suggested on the GA review. It looks better, particularly the lead. If there are any more issues, bring them up as well. Ssbbplayer (talk) 03:36, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, so all the issues have been appropriately addressed. The article looks fit to be a GA now. Cheers! Sainsf <^>Talk all words 06:39, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Sainsf: Thank you for your review on this article. After a long delay, it has finally been promoted to GA, yet 9 months ago, it was just only a start class article with little sources and tons of factual errors. I really liked how you broke down the article into each sections and the problems in each section. It made the GA review much easier to work with and easier to find and fix this issues. Moving content about "climate change"

[edit]

I am proposing to move some of the content that is currently in the section on "climate change" to the other article called Climate change in Argentina, so that only one paragraph or so stays here. Perhaps even to use the excerpt function from the abstract of Climate change in Argentina. What do you think? EMsmile (talk) 09:30, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@EMsmile: If you can summarize it in one paragraph (provided that the information is sourced), that would be good. I would not recommend using the excerpt function from the abstract of Climate change in Argentina as sometimes, that page may get vandalized or has unsourced information. It's the main reason I did not use the excerpt function from the abstract of Climatic Regions of Argentina. Ssbbplayer (talk) 16:57, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I've taken another look now and found that the entire 4 paragraphs that are there are also already included in the article Climate change in Argentina (with some small language adjustments; I am not sure which text is the "older" one). What I suggest to do now is ot remove those sentences from here that are perhaps too much detail for this overview article, so that in the end only two paragraphs with the main information remains, and the rest is to be found in the linked article Climate change in Argentina. Does that sound reasonable? That means I won't attempt to "summarise" the 4 paragraphs into one but decide what is more important to be kept here. EMsmile (talk) 02:25, 29 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have removed some of the sentences now, as discussed above. I think even more should be taken out. After all, what is the point in having a sub-article on Climate change in Argentina if we are repeating here 4 paragraphs from that sub-article? I think I would like to cull that down to two paragraphs. EMsmile (talk) 14:36, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
