General
[edit]Villages such as Tinryland, Bennekerry, Leighlinbridge etc should be allowed to be added.
The Carlow coat of arms / crest looks like this I thought
Sport

Sport
[edit]Unfortunately, Carlow has never won an All_ireland football title, and only one Leinster title. This needs to be amended
Population and crest
[edit]This page is for Cralow Town not county. The coat of arms you are asking for is for the county, the one showing a stylised carlow castle is for the town.
Where did the population stats come from on this page? According to the CSO those figures are wrong please see:
http://www.cso.ie/census/documents/vol1_entire.pdf
However the cso stats are for 2002 and these ones are supposed to be for 2006. Is there more up to date statistics that I'm not taking into account?
- Considering the repeated vandalism around here, any unsourced data should be replaced with verifiable data wherever possible, even if it might be slightly out of date. Sally Anne 20:33, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
Economy
[edit]The economy section is very weak, and seems only to mention the ever dwindling big companies like Braun and the now demolished Sugar Factory. There are a lot of medium sized businesses in Carlow that could be mentioned here, along with the towns status as a commuter town for Dublin and its surroundings. If the Carlow economy depended on Braun in any way, it would be little more than a medium sized village.

Meaning
[edit]Ceatharlach does not mean 'four lakes'!! It is from the Old Irish word cethrae meaning 'quadrupeds, cattle'. cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Place_names_in_Ireland and http://logainm.ie/Viewer.aspx?text=carlow Cmconraoi (talk) 19:05, 17 June 2010 (UTC)
Irish place name of Carlow
[edit]There exist at least two explanations about the Irish place name, one translating it to "quadruple lake", the other to "place of cattle". The former was backed up by literature (by Flanagan, Deirdre; Laurence Flanagan (1994). Irish Place Names. Dublin: Gill & Macmillan. p. 188. ISBN 0-7171-2066-X.), the latter by the online resource Logainm.ie. In a recent edit, it was now claimed that translation "place of cattle" is the widely accepted etymology but without any references to uphold that claim. I have myself no knowledge of Irish but I would in general simply follow established literature in such cases and Flanagan & Flanagan is one of the accepted standard works for this area. Personal opinions alone should not count here but just relevant secondary literature which can be cited. --AFBorchert (talk) 07:15, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
- The town's official Irish name is and always has been Ceatharlach, not Ceatharloch. The former is widely acsepted as the name of the town and county, the latter is not. ~Asarlaí 07:38, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
Carlow Castle
[edit]Carlow Castle exists as a stub article independant from this main Carlow town article - I was just wondering if some of the historic detail about the castle be moved to the page on it? Or at least some of it duplicated? Otherwise perhaps Carlow Castle should be redirected here?Smirkybec (talk) 19:32, 17 March 2014 (UTC)
- An interesting point. The way things stay, a reader looking for information on Carlow Castle would be better served by coming here rather than the article on the castle itself. I'm in favour of turning the article into a redirect here until someone wants to develop it into something a bit different. What do you reckon? Jstor's not working properly at the moment, but I'll probably have a go at expanding the article myself at some point. Nev1 (talk) 20:48, 11 April 2014 (UTC)
- I'd be interested in expanding the castle section as well. I've never created a redirect or a disambiguation before though! Smirkybec (talk) 23:09, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- I've quickly expanded the article with some material I had at hand. There is a lot more work to be done, though. As it is a national monument, it should surely remain an article of its own. --AFBorchert (talk) 20:01, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
- I agree that as it is a National Monument it probably should have its own page. Being from Carlow I didn't want to be biased though! There has been quite a few books written about it and recently the site has been renovated with access/information improved, so the page could do with the same. It's on my to do list :) Smirkybec (talk) 07:58, 25 June 2014 (UTC)
