Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on October 3, 2012.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that a 1.7-ton, 130-year-old cannon (pictured) was stolen and transported 3000 miles from Pasadena to Cambridge as part of the Caltech–MIT rivalry?

This reads like an ad for both schools

[edit]

I am an alum of one of the schools. This reads like an ad for both, appealing to nerdy high school seniors by distracting them with trifles to hide high rates of binge drinking, suicide, etc. MIT has done hacks for a long time, but this "rivalry" is only recent (there is a much longer history of hacks against Harvard). Is there some kind of sock puppetry / astroturfing going on here by the advertising wings of either or both schools? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.7.71.26 (talk) 12:47, 3 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I made this article of my own volition, as an alum myself of one of the schools and a frequent visitor of the other. It's worthy of coverage since it's fairly unique and has been covered by the national media. I'd also like to point out that the sources used in the article point to the rivalry's role in reducing stress for the students at these schools. There certainly could be another article on the Harvard–MIT rivalry, and if you would like to write it, please feel free to. Antony–22 (talkcontribs) 19:29, 5 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

started in 2005?

[edit]

I don't know why someone thinks this started in 2005. I arrived at Caltech in 1978 and there was already an MIT prank history then (though not at the more recent level). (Erniecohen (talk) 11:47, 23 October 2012 (UTC))[reply]

i went to MIT in the 80s, and had never even HEARD of caltech. all our hacks were directed at harvard.
while there may have been isolated incidents way back when, it must have fizzled out by the 60s or 70s. honestly, even as people spoke of heading to stanford or UCB for grad school, caltech just wasn't on anyone's radar (sorry!).
this current batch is definitely of recent vintage. "2005" sounds about right to me. 209.172.25.87 (talk) 04:53, 11 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have sources for these, or can you at least describe them? If we can find sources we can add them. Antony–22 (talkcontribs) 18:18, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'll start reviewing very soon. Keilana|Parlez ici 22:44, 21 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I think this is pretty close but I have a few comments before we get there.

  • In the first section, you mention "RFs", is that an acronym? I checked the source and it didn't clarify.
    • I'd had some trouble finding a reliable source for that, but I found one and added the information.
  • The first paragraph about MIT in "The schools" is choppy.
    • Fixed.
  • I'm personally not a huge fan of bulleted lists in articles, if there's a way you could prosify the list of pranks I think it would be better for the reader. I'm open to both, just wanted to bring it up.
    • Being that there are five independent sets of pranks, I felt that this format is easier for the reader to follow.
  • Is there a source for the Campus Preview Weekend section that is not affiliated with either school?
    • The cannon heist got much more press coverage, some of which mentions the earlier pranks in passing, such as this article. I haven't found any standalone articles about it.
  • Why is Ride of the Valkyries forbidden at Caltech?
    • Info added.
  • The second paragraph on the Fleming cannon has a duplicate citation; it just needs the one at the end of the paragraph, I think.
    • Yeah, whoever reviewed this for DYK made me put it there. :-)
  • I spot-checked for close paraphrasing and it looked fine.

That's all I have for now, you did a great job on this article. Best, Keilana|Parlez ici 14:06, 12 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Comments above, everything should be fixed. Antony–22 (talkcontribs) 04:17, 16 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry it took me so long to take a second look! It looks good and I'm going to go ahead and pass it. Great work. Keilana|Parlez ici 13:54, 28 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Include caltechrejects.com?

[edit]

http//caltechrejects.com redirects to MIT's website. Should this be mentioned in the article? It's been registered since 2013. 71.121.204.181 (talk) 19:38, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
