Unsourced material
[edit]Can we get sources about him being "charged"? Also, is there material about him being an anti-semite? Thanks, --Tom 12:38, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
- In reading "The Years of Extermination: Germany and the Jews, 1939-1945", the author, Saul Friedlaender, writes as follows about Long: "His attitude, openly expressed in his diary, derived from an unmistakable hostility to Jews. Long's anti-Semitism was neither shrill nor rabid; yet there is little doubt that the assistant secretary of state spared no effort to limit Jewish immigration to the utmost while it was still possible, and to scuttle any rescue projects during the crucial 1942-43 period." Reference is given to books by Henry L. Feingold writing in "The Politics of Rescue: The Roosevelt administration and the Holocaust". --Neil 21:01, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
I've just read the War Diary. I don't see the "unmistakable hostility to Jews" in there though I was looking for it out of an understanding that Long was supposed to have been hostile. Instead, I see a rigid anticommunism, deep-seated security fears (both about Fascists and Communists), fears that a mass-invitation of refugees would allow subversives (i.e. communists) into the country without time to screen for them, and a rigid legalism--he constantly notes that the law he was charged with upholding did not permit the kinds of rule-bending that others were asking him to do. He does not reference what Frankfurter and others at the time were becoming aware of about the concentration camps and the 'Final Solution,' and while he was privy to some intelligence I see some things that he should have mentioned that he did not.Neptune1969 (talk) 02:08, 3 July 2011 (UTC)
New categories
[edit]How about adding two new categories for people like this clown: In addition to Ambassadors of the United States, Embarrassments to the United States; and one called American Anti-Semites. :P Jim_Lockhart (talk) 05:13, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
Antisemitism
[edit]According to Higham, Charles; The Duchess of Windsor/The Secret Life; New York; McGraw-Hill; p304n on September 9, 1940 Long refused permission for a Jewish refugee ship from Europe to land in Norfolk, VA. The vessel was turned back and many (likely most, in this writer's opinion) of the Jews died in concentration camps. Dick Kimball (talk) 17:53, 7 December 2009 (UTC)
It is not just in Higham, whose works are more incendiary than anything. The ship was the Quanza. Neptune1969 (talk) 02:12, 3 July 2011 (UTC)
I should amend my earlier note. The Quanza was allowed to dock at Norfolk, but the ship that returned (and with its Jewish passengers largely ending up in concentration camps) was the St. Louis.Neptune1969 (talk) 02:28, 4 July 2011 (UTC)
Long is quoted in 'Hitler and the Holocaust,' Robert S. Wistrich, Modern Library, New York, 2001, p.190 saying "Hitler's Mein Kampf is eloquent in opposition to Jewry and to Jews as exponents of communism and chaos." Little doubt about his Anti-Semitism and General bigotry, a man of high ideals for white Anglo-Saxon Protestants but also holding base and desreputable opinions of any persons unlike himself. PBS website has some additional background http://www.pbs.org/wgbh//amex/holocaust/peopleevents/pandeAMEX90.html. In light of this, one wonders what the attraction of American jews has been to WASP elitist institutions represented by Ivy League universities or FDR's Democrat party. When a working-class uprising like Nazism (or alt-right) occurs, the jews cannot count on WASP elite for protection. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.29.183.117 (talk) 03:32, 18 May 2017 (UTC)
