Reasons for changing city names

Here is the reason for making some changes to what I think is a good article. The following could be a start for a useful discussion, in case someone disagrees with my edits:
Cities widely known in the scholarship with their medieval names should be mentioned as such. E.g. I changed numerous Odrin instances to Adrianople because the latter is how it was called by its (Byzantine) inhabitants and the primary sources (ok, it was actually called Adrianopolis but this wouldn't be very useful). Otherwise, why not calling it by its current Turkish name (Edirne) or why not calling medieval 'Constantinople as Istanbul? Same stands for Mesembria (Nesebar).
