[edit]Were my improvements alriht???
I have re-assessed this article as "Start," and am contemplating whether it maybe even deserves a B. The article appears to cover all the major details of the battle, and includes an infobox. I don't know much about this period of history, so I can't really guess at how much more could be said. I have rated the battle as Mid-Importance because, as far as I am aware, it was the Battle of Alesia that was far more crucial to the Roman-Vercingetorix (Gauls) conflict; Gergovia was just one chapter of the events leading up to Alesia. Gergovia wasn't Caesar's only military defeat. He was also defeated at the battle of Dyrrhachium during the Civil War. Varlet16 21:35, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
error about Boii
[edit]This statement was flat-out wrong:
"Caesar had settled the Boii in the town after defeating them in the Helvetian War, as subordinates to the loyally pro-Roman Aedui."
The Boii settled in Gorgobina, not Gergovia; Gorgobina was on the western edge of Aeduan territory, and these Boii were later given Aeduan citizenship. Gergovia, as Vercingetorix's birthplace, would be in Arvernian territory, yes? At the beginning of the Gallic Wars, both the Aedui and the Arverni had been independent civitates under treaties with Rome since about 120 BC — which didn't stop them from fighting with each other (see Bellum Gallicum 1). One of the interesting things about Vercingetorix's uprising in 52 is that there hadn't been a peep out of the Arverni since Caesar entered Celtica in 58. Caesar seems to have been totally blindsided; he never seems to have had any concerns about Arvernian loyalty, and unlike some Gallic leaders who appear throughout the BG, Vercingetorix seems to come out of nowhere, a full-blown supreme commander. (I don't know why this fact doesn't receive more attention in the histories: Caesar was caught with his pants down, too busy overreaching in Britannia and Germania and too worried about politics back in Rome to see the biggest danger to his far-from-closed conquest of Gaul.) Anyway, the point is that the Aedui probably wanted the Boii there as a buffer against the Arverni. Cynwolfe (talk) 12:45, 7 October 2009 (UTC)
