Linking where a page does not exist
[edit]With regard to the linking of “Elfin Mono” to the Elfin Sports Cars page in the form [[Elfin Sports Cars|Elfin]] Mono rather than [[Elfin Sports Cars|Elfin Mono]] , it is interesting to note that I recently asked a question at the Help Desk re a similar situation and was advised that the latter is the correct approach. Is there a section in Help which contradicts the Help Desk advice I was given? GTHO (talk) 02:32, 19 January 2010 (UTC)
- It contradicts because it gives a false impression. There are articles for individual race cars, and race car manufacturers. By linking in Elfin Mono it implies that it is linking to the car, like for example the difference between Holden and Holden Commodore. You'd never place a link from Holden Commodore to Holden - like (Holden|Holden Commodore) would you? I can't see the difference. Perhaps a better example are Cooper Formula 1 cars. A few of them have articles, for example the Cooper T51, where as the Cooper T53 does not. Confusion starts that because Cooper T51 would link straight to the article on the car, but T53 would link to Cooper Car Company, but visually they would look the same. Elfin Mallala has its own article but placed in a list of Elfins, linking as your advice would suggest would give two contrary impressions, depending on which Elfin was selected.
- If all Elfin models were free of individual articles I would understand the advice. But they aren't. --Falcadore (talk) 03:35, 19 January 2010 (UTC)
- I’ve been back to the Help Desk and sought some further advice. This can be viewed at Linking where a page does not exist. I assume that the logic is that linking as (for example) Elfin Mono would leave the reader thinking that the target page only covers Elfin Sports Cars and that here is no information there re the Mono. However linking as Elfin Mono makes it clear that the link does lead to information about that model. However the Linking help page suggests that the best way to handle situations like this is to link as Elfin Mono, create an Elfin Mono page and then redirect that page to Elfin Sports Cars. A bit of a chore, but I can see multiple advantages in this approach. GTHO (talk) 02:31, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
- All Elfin Sports Cars does really is confirm that the Elfin Mono exists. I'm not sure that it really qualifies as information on the Elfin Mono. That to me is like suggesting the phone book could be used as a reference for an article about an individual. --Falcadore (talk) 02:59, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
- Looking at 1973 Australian Drivers' Championship which I've recently tidied. You had links from (Lola T330) to (Lola Cars). Looking at the Lola article, none of the Formula 5000s are mentioned by name, and very little is said about them, other than they raced in several series. --Falcadore (talk) 09:10, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
- You're right. Linking the whole name Lola T330 to Lola Cars was my mistake and has now been fixed. GTHO (talk) 23:02, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
- I've just turned the redirect into a proper article.Pineapple Fez 05:31, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
