"obliged" vs "obligated"

[edit]

To me (an American), "obliged" means that I am in debt to someone. "Obligated" means that I'm required to do something, but it is not a term commonly used as a verb -- "required" is more common. I wonder if it means something different to a speaker of British English?

Since the edit history has bounced back and forth a few times already between "obliged" and "obligated", I'm going to make a change to "required" and hope that if someone else changes, they will make the reasons for their change plain here on the talk page. It seems like a very silly thing to escalate into an edit war, so I'm calling for civility. Mamawrites 19:04, 30 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Further Information

[edit]

This page on google books (account required) seems to be about the same person, and says he was Director-General of the Information Services and headmaster of Adams' Grammar School - neither of these feature in the article at the moment. I wondered if someone who knew more about the person in question might like to add to the article. – drw25 (talk) 03:14, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
