Please post this at Oblasts of Kyrgyzstan. We are not suppose to agglutinate Turkic grammatical units to a borrowed word as long as most English speakers are only familiar with the original form. Changcheng 00:53, 20 May 2004 (UTC)~

Provinces - Wikipedia based invention
[edit]In 2004 one user of Wikipedia decided to use the term "province" [1] to refer to the oblasts.
In 2005 another user decided to use "province" instead of "oblast".
But except for Wikipedia and the Google Database, there seems to be almost no evidence that supports this translation.
As of 2014-10-16 Google shows a preview for "Talas Province" but not for "Talas Region" - maybe Google just copied the data from Wikipedia.

Oblastı or oblusu
[edit]I noticed that in at least the English Kyrgyzstan articles on oblasts the local name for the administrative unit was областы (oblastı), but the Kyrgyz articles showed it as облусу (oblusu). In addition, I have found little evidence to support that the Kyrgyz translation is областы, while there is much more evidence to suggest it is in fact облусу. I searched online dictionaries, coming up with облус (IPA: ˈɒbləst) on Glosbe and облусу on Google Translate. I also did a general search on the web with Batken Region. For баткен областы I received about 199,000 results, while I received about 785,000 results for баткен облусу.
If anyone could weigh in with more sources either for or against this translation, or find a correct plural and/or a better transliteration for it, it would be greatly appreciated. With the current evidence I will be changing the original translations. Mordecai Valasek (talk) 22:53, 30 January 2017 (UTC)
I just found a news cast with облусу appearing at about 2:36 (ЗАМАН - Баткен облусу - келечеги кең аймак). If anyone can verify whether or not this news cast is in Kyrgyz it would be greatly appreciated. Note that I also did a search for баткен облус with only about 221,000 results.
