Dubious Lightning story
[edit]"[A.P.'s mother] was struck by lightning, which gave A.P. a tremor in his right hand" is a great bit of mythology for a folk musician, but a little suspicious. Google reveals that the story changes depending where you look. Time magazine describes the event as "a tree got struck by lightning and touched her belly [giving him the tremor]" while PBS says she was "nearly struck by lightning" and that his mother ascribed the tremor to this. Another from teachrock ignores most of these and just says that "his mother blamed a lightning storm when she was pregnant". I don't think it's appropriate for this sentence to be written as if it's a matter of fact with no citations (especially as a medical condition), but it seems fundamental to 'his story' so i've worded it the best I can with limited knowledge. It would really benefit from someone who has read an autobiography or knows more about the Carter family to rewrite and cite with a direct quote from "the mother", if it exists at all.
Original sentence: While A.P.'s mother was pregnant with him she was struck by lightning, which gave A.P. a tremor in his right hand, but that didn't stop him from learning the fiddle and guitar when he was young.
Basic corrected sentence: A.P. suffered from a tremor in his right hand, which his mother ascribed a lightning strike when she was pregnant. Despite this he successfully learnt the fiddle and guitar during his childhood.
