Request for update: Al-Qahtani has scored 5 goals

Would whoever is responsible for editing the main page, update the goal-scorers table to reflect the fact that Al-Qahtani has scored 5 goals.

Yasser Al Qahtani has only scored 4 goals. You may be mistaken because until recently one of the goals attributed to "Al Qahtani" was actually scored by his teammate Abdulrahman Al Qahtani. --Canley 12:36, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Groups and tables

Before anyone goes crazy on creating sections for each group, can we decide on a suitable format first - there was discussion on this at Talk:2006 FIFA World Cup#CONDENSE? after the event, but it would nice to get it sorted well in advance, so that during the event itself we can concentrate on information itself rather than formatting. -- Chuq 03:20, 20 December 2006 (UTC) - i have added match info for the group stages, tell me if you do no want this or not. ty! - Rogendool

Thõng Nhãt Stadium

I'm pretty sure that the stadium listed in Ho Chi Minh for the final game between Qatar and UAE in Group B is being played there. I'm well aware that the AFC site has it listed as the Army stadium. But I believe its a mistake. There is only one suitable venue in HCM capable of hosting a football match and that is Thõng Nhãt. There is an Army Stadium in HCM, but I believe its an indoor arena for futsal and the like. Please can someone put me out of my misery - I sure as hell have never heard of such a venue in Vietnam before! Gaijin84 01:27, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

So again - please don't change it, without even discussing this, ffs. Its not Thien Truong in Nam Dinh - it was a venue confirmed as a potential second venue a year ago, but it was dropped. The game will be played in Military Zone 7's stadium (Sân vận động Quân khu 7) in Phu Nhuan district, which has been renamed for the tournament. It was indeed the Army Stadium (although technically it wasn't) - so I apoligise for changing it. Gaijin84 11:43, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

Ah, the venue you said was an Military Zone 7's Indoor Stadium and if you walk about 50m, it was Military Zone 7's stadium (Sân vận động Quân khu 7)but not in Phu Nhuan district, it is in Tan Binh district, you should log to www.wikimapia.org to discover it.58.186.167.151 06:35, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

Most of the army stuff in HCM is located in Phu Nhuan. But yes, I am confusing it with the indoor complex of the similarish name. You are right about it being in Tân Bình - most of the new constructions are being build around that area. Gaijin84 00:32, 7 May 2007 (UTC)
Just out of interest, does anyone want to create an entry for that stadium? Just for completeness sake. I had to scour the web extensively to get the capacity of the thing. Gaijin84 00:35, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Just a mistake

Oh I'm sorry, I read the news in May 9 but in 2006, I'm sorry. Thank you. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 58.186.167.193 (talk) 14:40, 4 May 2007 (UTC). Ahh, read this: http://www.vff.org.vn/?page=english&p=&p_child=&id=6033 ( April 21, 2007)

match ball

I added some info about the match ball because I thought it was interesting. Feel free to move it or add/change info if you like, I wasn't too sure where I could stick it. Why does it say that it's the first ball designed for any competition in Asia? What about Fevernova in the 2002 World Cup? It was in Asia. Gaijin84 14:16, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

Broadcast rights / Match squads

I've got a little communique, ahead of the festivities tomorrow, and there is some related to broadcast rights and distribution. I would be happy to put the data within the article if it is necessary. I personally don't think it is. I'm also decoding several of the current squads lists that have been finalised. Sadly the official sites have been slow updating them. ;) If anyone can help fill in the blanks of the Oman team that would be great. Gaijin84 23:42, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

I'm updating the Oman and Bahrain squads as much as I can. Best regards. Jogurney 13:37, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

Edits

  • Please don't edit the tables until the matches are finished, its very confusing and just adds to unnecessary changes.
  • Please leave the blank entries as they are, it allows them to be created and populated for future reference. Again, avoiding unnecessary edits at a later stage.

I don't mind people playing about with the format (especially in terms of naming conventions) but the above reasons are valid for the article. Thank you. Gaijin84 12:25, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

Younis, I say Younis...

Yawn. Right let's clear something up. There is more than one Mahmoud who plays for the Iraq national team. To complicate matters even further, ladies and gentlemen - Mahmoud is not his surname its Khalaf/Khalef - if you of course can click the link and take a quick peek at the official AFC match report you will see this.

Hence the reason why he uses Younis M. on the back of his shirt. I'm well aware of the previous entry, but its incorrect. He's listed as Y. Mahmoud, Younis, Younis M, or even Y.M. Khalef, but never simply Mahmoud as listed. This is to avoid the incorrect assumption that he is someone else. I am well aware that the link is correct, but there is a clear convention that needs to be looked at here.

Whilst we are on the subject of names, please don't fuck up the Vietnamese ones. Gaijin84 15:02, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

In the 1986 World Cup all the Iraqi players are referred to by two names, even as scorers in the match reports. Mjefm 22:22, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
Can someone clarify for me what the accepted style is for listing goals in the football box template? Of course it is usually the surname, but my instinct would be the name on the player's shirt, which takes into account Asian surnames, South American "nicknames" (I'm pretty sure Sebastián Quintana has "Sebastián" on his shirt, not "Quintana" as listed here) and multiple team members with the same surname such as the two Mahmouds in the Iraqi team, the two Al-Qhatanis in the Saudi team, and the various Kims in the Korean team (who appear to have their full names listed here). --Canley 03:38, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

Why is the page locked?

I think it is unfair when the page is locked for editing! I am sorry I will create another page for AFC Asian Cup 2007 for everybody who pays attention can contribute. {{editprotected}} Peanux 03:15, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

The reason why the page is semi-protected is because there has been a lot of vandalism ever since Australia lost against Iraq. As a newly registered user, you may edit it again in a couple more days (2 or 3, I think). Don't worry.--Kylohk 10:12, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

Eliminated Teams

Fairly often eliminated teams are marked with red (and sure qualifiers with green) on Wikipedia Tournaments, for instance this was used on Copa America 2007. (The red is later removed for viewability.) Will this be used here? If so, United Arab Emirates should be eliminated already. I don't have much else to contribute with here, so I'd rather not start messing around with something you are working with, just figured I'd mention it and let you all decide how you like to do it =) 90.228.255.194 10:15, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

Once all of the group matches are over it's safe to remove the red color from the eliminated teams. --Howard the Duck 16:43, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

Australia

For those Australia interested out there, I believe Australia will qualify for the next round if

  • They win against Thailand, and Iraq wins or draws against Oman.
  • They win by two goals against Thailand, and Oman wins by one or three or more goals over Iraq.
  • They win by three or more goals against Thailand.
  • They win by two goals against Thailand, Oman wins by two goals over Iraq, but make less or as many goals as Australia does, while doing so (for instance, Australia defeats Thailand 2-0 and Oman defeats Iraq 2-0).

If they win by two goals against Thailand and Oman wins by two goals over Iraq, and make one more goal than Australia while doing so (as in Australia - Thailand 2-0 and Oman - Iraq 3-1 for instance), then there'll be drawing of lots!

See 9E at http://www.afcasiancup.com/shared/data/30/AFC%20Asian%20Cup%202007%20-%20Finals%20Competition%20Regulations.pdf 90.228.255.194 10:41, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

Qualification Scenarios - One Game to Go

Alright, here's what I have for qualifying. Let me know if anything does not agree with the official qualification rules.

Group A

  • Iraq qualifies if they win or draw against Oman.
  • Thailand qualifies if they win or draw against Australia.
  • Australia qualifies if they win against Thailand AND Oman loses or draws against Iraq.
  • Oman qualifies if they win against Iraq AND Australia loses or draws against Thailand.

If Australia and Oman both win, then there will be a four way tie at four points. If this happens, then Iraq or Thailand can qualify if they only lose by one goal. If Australia or Oman win their match by at least three goals, then they shall advance. If either game comes down to a two-goal margin, then total goals will be the tiebreaker, with Iraq holding the edge over Oman and Australia the edge over Thailand.

Group B

  • Japan qualifies if they win or draw against Vietnam, or if Qatar loses or draws against United Arab Emirates.
  • Vietnam qualifies if they win against Japan, if they draw against Japan at 2-2 or higher, or if Qatar loses or draws against United Arab Emirates.
  • Qatar qualifies if they win against United Arab Emirates AND either Japan wins over Vietnam, Vietnam wins over Japan, or Japan and Vietnam draw 0-0.

If Qatar wins and Japan and Vietnam draw 1-1, then Qatar and Japan will advance if Qatar wins by three goals or more over United Arab Emirates, and Japan and Vietnam will advance if Qatar wins by only one goal. If Qatar wins by exactly two goals, then goals scored will come into play, and Japan will qualify (as they will have more goals than Vietnam).

Group C

  • China qualifies if they win or draw against Uzbekistan.
  • Iran qualifies if they win or draw against Malaysia, or if Uzbekistan loses or draws against China.
  • Uzbekistan qualifies if they win against China.

Should Iran and China both lose, then goal difference will be taken into account. So long as China does not lose by more than three goals, they will advance.

Group D

  • Saudi Arabia qualifies if they win or draw against Bahrain, or if they lose AND Indonesia draws with Korea.
  • Indonesia qualifies if they win against Korea, or if they draw AND Bahrain loses or draws with Saudi Arabia.
  • Bahrain qualifies if they win against Saudi Arabia, or if they draw AND Indonesia loses to Korea.
  • Korea qualifies if they win against Indonesia AND Saudi Arabia wins against Bahrain.

If Bahrain wins against Saudi Arabia and Korea wins against Indonesia, then Korea will advance if either game is won by more than one goal. If both games are one-goal games, then it will come down to goals scored between Saudi Arabia and Korea.

Tiebreaking criteria

If two or more teams in a group are equal on points on completion of the group matches, their places shall be determined as follows:

  1. Greater number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned.
  2. Goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned.
  3. Greater number of goals scored in the group matches between the teams concerned (Away Goals do not apply in this stage of the competition).
  4. Goal difference in all the group matches.
  5. Kicks from the penalty mark if only two teams are involved and they are both on the field of play.
  6. Drawing of lots.

For instance, say Iraq loses to Oman then Oman is through and Iraq are out.... and if Iran and China happen to have the same number of points at the end of group matches, because they draw 2-2 in their head-to-head match, then the side that has a better Goal Difference will be the winner of the group C..... anyway I hope Iran will be the winner of the death group C....

RespeK to all you lot out there wondering what the hell is/are tie-breaking criterion/criteria.

Thailand

It'sa interesting that Thailand didn't get to host anything past the quarterfinals. The most logical thing would have been something like Thailand third place playoff, Indonesia final (or one of the semifinalists being given to Thailand). Anyone know why this is the case? Due to the problems with their stadiums? Nil Einne 21:40, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

well, mate that's cause they got the oppening ceremony and all the benefits from that... so it makes a bit of sense...
Indonesia gets both 3rd/4th place an the Final because two of their stadiums have better quality and greater capcacity and I think in either quarter final or Semi Final they dont get any of the scheduled matches.... so there you go.... and dont forget to keep it legal...

RespeK--Sorkhadem 15:24, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

I don't know about better quality. Better capacity is however not true. In fact as the article shows, Malaysia's biggest stadium has the same legal capacity as Indonesia's and Malaysia's second stadium has possibly twice the capacity of Indonesia's second (there appears to be some confusion about the actual capacity but it's definitely higher then Palembang according to all information). Indonesia perhaps has a greater population to fill the stadiums and Palembang is in a completely different part of Indonesia (compared to Shah Alam which is fairly near Bukit Jalil). Indonesia indeed didn't have any semifinals but that was my point. Each country got a quarterfinal. Malaysia and Vietnam each got a semifinal. It seemed logical then that Indonesia would get a final and Thailand would get third-place playoff, or something of that sort. However I didn't consider that Thailand got the opening ceremony Nil Einne 21:44, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

The article lists a different capacity for the stadium. Was temporary seating erected or is the article figure outdated or what? Nil Einne 21:53, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

See [1]. 69,372 seats + 11,000 standing = 80,000 capacity. Tripledot 14:55, 26 July 2007 (UTC)

Goal scorer names

Right, I'm going to change all the goal scorer names to the official names on their shirts (as listed on the AFC Asian Cup website official match reports). There seems to be a lot of confusion as there are two Saudi players listed as "Al-Qahtani", as there are five goals appearing under that name. Yasser Al Qahtani has scored 4 goals (and his shirt name is "Yasser"), and his teammate Abdulrahman Al Qhatani has scored 1. Hopefully this will stop people insisting Yasser is the top scorer of the tournament with 5 goals. --Canley 02:03, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

Another goal scorer names

Please, change all S.Korean football players' names as Koreans use both last and first name to specify a person. Even if their jersey says 'only' their first name, 'only' the first name would not mean anything. They had to put there first names because their are too many same last names in the squad. Park Ji-Sung of Manchester Utd. would be a great example. His Man Utd. jersey says "J.S Park" but his national team jersey says "JISUNG" because there are also lots of football player whose last names are Park in South Korea.

Group Section Cleanup

I'm proposing a new structure for the Group stage section which you can see here. You can read that page for more information on it. The new proposal also introduces a separate page for each of the Groups, with its general structure much like previous World Cup group pages, for example here. – Beamerized 13:36, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

I disagree with this proposal. If I was you, I would use a model similar to the UEFA Champions League 2006-07 page, which has the final group tables in the main article, and then the match summaries on a separate group stage page. - PeeJay 18:44, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
Lets follow the 2006 FIFA World Cup except for the separate subpages, the goal scorers tell pretty much the story. If there should be a match summary, the Final should have it. --Howard the Duck 01:03, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
To be honest, if every UEFA Champions League and European Championship match deserves a summary template, then so does every match at the Asian Cup. They just shouldn't be on the main article. I would support having two sub-pages, one for the group stage and one for the knockout stage, but I wouldn't advocate having separate pages for each group. Having each group on an individual page only really works when you plan on listing the starting line-ups as with the FIFA World Cup group pages. - PeeJay 09:50, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Please help the awards section!

im figuring out who won what through different sources! help

Yasser Al-Qahtani has scored only four goals!

Abdulrahman Al-Qahtani scored 1. The top scorers are Y.Qahtani, Takahara, and Y.Mahmoud all on 4 goals.
