Majority/Minority/Party leaders

Hello @Asdasdasdff, hope you are doing well today. But one question I have been wondering is if there were even party leaders in the modern sense at this point in the history of the legislature? Like today there's Devin LeMahieu and Dianne Hesselbein in the Senate, or Vos and Neubauer in the Assembly, but it seems the farther back I go in pages for legislative sessions, there doesn't seem to be mention of leadership in either chamber besides president, president pro-tem, or assembly speaker. Is this simply because party leadership, a majority/minority leader, didn't exist at this point, or is it just a sourcing issue? I saw your expansion for the article on Speaker Jorge Carow, and it seems more clear to me who the various "leaders" for the parties in that session of the assembly, those being Carow (Prog), Frank Graass (Rep), Cornelius Young (Dem), and Edward Kiefer (Soc) going off of who was nominated and voted on for speaker. But it seems far more vague for the Senate. With the first page I could find listing majority/minority leaders being the 65th Wisconsin Legislature. Yeah, it definitely is much harder to figure out in this era and earlier, I think the leadership structure was less formal and more opaque. The recent Blue Books have included "historical lists" of Senate and Assembly majority & minority leaders, and the LRB list only goes back to 1937. (Page 493) So if LRB can't identify further back, I'm not sure it's possible to do so. I do think we can at least look at the Senate and Assembly journals and see who ran for speaker/president pro tem as possible indicators of which members were leader-ish. -- Asdasdasdff (talk) 23:06, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
