[edit]Álvaro Cunhal really suported almost all USSR foreign policys and their interventions in other countries like Hungary and Czechoslovakia, unlike other communist leaders, like Santiago Carrillo and Enrico Berlinguer. He also suported inicially the August 1991 coup that would finnish with USSR. The kind of communism that he always suported was totalitarian communist, that he believed to be the only true democracy. I say that in the most absolute Neutral Point of View. Like it or not, Álvaro Cunhal was the most orthodox from all the western Europe secretary-general. Not to mencione some of these points creates a rather non neutral or like too pro-Cunhal biography, like it´s shown here. This entry is not for or against Cunhal, but it must allow to all the readers to know him and his politics better. User:Mistico
Let me give you a different perspective. I feel that it is an insult to Cunhal to say he was a "totalitarian", as it is solely based on appreciations from his enemies. I feel it would be simple to contradict that assertion by reading the 1962 PCP Program, in which a plural democracy for Portugal is clearly the objective. Or his speech after he returned from exile, in April, 29, 1974. Therefore I´m forced to say that I don't think that Mistico's view of Cunhal is not "neutral". It IS hard to be neutral about Cunhal, I accept that. But when someone had the chance - and I did - to talk privately with him, or laugh with him (his sarcastic sense of humour is something I'd like to be more exposed: just imagine him saying that sometimes he felt the need to use his keychain as a fake mobile phone, in order to be like everyone else in the street...). In the end, History will be more just about him. But le me remind you that, in spite of being in prison for 15 years, 8 of which in total isolation (plus 15 months incomunicado), beaten and tortured, no one as ever heard a word from him seeking revenge from that. So, I just ask you all to be more open-minded when discussing Cunhal. Vvvieira
