Sydney Lauren Pulver (born August 20, 1999) is an American professional soccer player who last played as a midfielder for San Diego Wave FC in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). She played college soccer for the Washington State Cougars and was drafted by the San Diego Wave in the 2022 NWSL Draft.
Early life
[edit]Pulver was born in Parker, Colorado,[2] where she started playing soccer with her sister Brooke as a four-year-old.[3] Pulver attended Regis Jesuit High School,[4][5] where she helped the team reach the quarterfinals of the 5A State Championships as a senior. She also was named to the Colorado all-state first team in 2017 and was an all-state and all-conference honoree for three years in a row.[2][6] Pulver also played for ECNL club Real Colorado in her youth, where she contributed to two ECNL national finals appearances in 2014 and 2016.[7][8] Pulver cited her parents, who formerly played collegiate basketball, as inspirational figures in her soccer journey.[9]
College career
[edit]Pulver matriculated at Washington State University, where she played for the Washington State Cougars from 2017 to 2021. She scored her first college goal as a freshman on September 3, 2017, in a 5–0 victory over Georgia Southern.[10] Pulver was named as a Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention at the end of her sophomore season, marking her first college honor.[11][2] Pulver continued to gain more playing time as her college career progressed. In her extra year of college eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Pulver started in all 21 of Washington State's games.[2] She also was named to the Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll[12] and twice earned Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week[13][14] honors due to her work as a defensive midfielder.[15][2] Pulver completed her career at Washington State with 8 goals and 10 assists. Her 98 appearances and 91 starts[2][16] both set program records.[3][17]
Club career
[edit]On December 18, 2021, Pulver was selected in the 2022 NWSL Draft by expansion team San Diego Wave FC.[18] She was drafted in the 2nd round and 25th overall.[19][20] Pulver later signed with the club and participated in her rookie season.[21] On June 19, 2022, Pulver made her professional debut in a 3–0 win over NJ/NY Gotham FC, playing seven minutes[22] as a second-half substitute.[23][24] She did not play again as the Wave advanced to the NWSL playoffs before getting eliminated by Portland Thorns FC.[25][26] At the end of the season, Pulver was out of contract and did not return to San Diego.[27][28][29]
