Amateur wrestling career

[edit]

High school

[edit]

2016–2017

[edit]

Allred attended Shenandoah High School in Middletown, Indiana. He began his high school career in the 170-pound weight class. During the 2016–17 season, Allred wrestled at the Shamrock Duals, finishing 5–0 with four of his wins coming via fall. Allred also wrestled in the IHSWCA Team State Duals, finishing with a 4–0 record and helping Shenandoah finish second in the 1A duals. In his first postseason run, Allred made it to the IHSAA Semi-State Finals, where he would lose to Joe Mazero of Hamilton Southeastern in the quarterfinals. In February, Allred wrestled in the 2017 Indiana Frosh-Soph State Championships, going 4–0 and winning the tournament.[1] During the 2017 ISWA State Finals, Allred went 10–0 in folkstyle, freestyle, and Greco-Roman to earn the triple crown.[2] At the 2017 USMC/USAW Cadet National Championships, Allred would 8–2 in Greco-Roman to finish fourth, earning Fargo All-American status. He also competed in freestyle, finishing 1–2.[3]

2017–2018

[edit]

During the 2017–18 season, Allred bumped up to the 182-pound weight class. He would make it to the quarterfinals of the 2018 IHSAA State Finals before losing to Noah Cressell of Wabash. In the consolation bracket, he would beat Cade Girgenti of Chesterton to finish fifth in the tournament. During the ISWA Cadet Folkstyle State Finals, Allred finished first to qualify for the USAW Cadet Folkstyle National Championships. Allred would go 4–0 during the tournament to win at 195 pounds. In April 2018, Allred competed in the NWCA/USAW National High School Folkstyle Duals, where Indiana Gold would be crowned national champs and Allred was named Most Outstanding Wrestler after finishing 7–0.

2018–2019

[edit]

Allred gained weight again and competed at 195 pounds during the 2018–19 season. Allred would make the 2019 IHSAA State Finals, this time coming away in first place after four straight bonus point wins.[4] On April 18, Allred competed in the FloNationals US Cadet Pan American Team Trials. He would finish first in freestyle and second in Greco-Roman. On May 31, Allred competed in the UWW US Cadet World Team Trials. Allred would finish third in Greco-Roman but would break his elbow during a freestyle match against Gavin Carter, forcing him to forfeit out of the tournament. His injury forced him to pull out of the 2019 Cadet Pan American Championships.

2019–2020

[edit]

Allred went into the 2019–20 season as the best 195-pounder in the state, repeating as a state champion at the 2020 IHSAA State Finals.[5] After the season, Allred was awarded the IndianaMat Mr. Gorilla Award and Indiana Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award.[6][7] Allred finished his high school career with a 146–2 record and 74-match winning streak.[8]

College

[edit]

On National Signing Day in November 2019, Allred committed to Mark Manning and the Nebraska Cornhuskers as the No. 1 ranked 195-pounder and No. 2 ranked overall wrestler in the state of Indiana.[9][10]

2020–2021

[edit]

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Allred's freshman season was postponed to 2021.[11] Allred made his senior debut when he competed in the 2020 US Senior Nationals at 97 kilograms.[12] Allred would drop both of his matches.

In January, Nebraska announced they would wrestle with nine total opponents in six meets.[13] Allred would make his collegiate debut as an extra on January 8 against Minnesota, losing by decision to Dylan Anderson.[14] A week later, Allred would wrestle as an extra again against Iowa, winning his first collegiate match after he beat Connor Corbin by major decision.[15] Allred finished his true freshman season 1–1, but due to the COVID-19 eligibility rules he did not use up any of his eligibility and would be considered a freshman for the 2021–22 wrestling season.[16]

2021–2022

[edit]

Allred sat behind Eric Schultz, Cade Svoboda, and Anthony Gaona during the 2021–22 season while redshirting.[17] During the 2021 Daktronic Open, Allred would pin Yonger Bastida – who would become an All-American later that year – on his way to an individual championship.[18] Allred would also wrestle in the 2022 Hastings Open, winning three of his four matches via fall to claim his second individual championship of the season.[19] Allred finished with an undefeated 3–0 (7–0) record as a redshirt.[20]

2022–2023

[edit]

Allred was named the 197-pound starter for the 2022–23 season.[21] He made his dual-meet debut on November 4, beating North Dakota State's Owen Pentz 4–2 in sudden victory.[22] During Nebraska's 2022 in-season tournaments, Allred went a combined 5–0 in the Journeymen Collegiate Classic and Navy Classic to win two individual titles.[23][24] On February 7, Allred was named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week after earning pins over Zac Braunagel and Hayden Copass.[25] During the 2023 Big Ten Wrestling Championships, Allred advanced to the finals against Penn State's Max Dean, who won the 2022 national championship at 197 pounds.[26] Allred would upset Dean to become the first Nebraska wrestler to win a Big Ten championship since 2015.[27] Allred then received an automatic berth to the 2023 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships,[28] where he would reach the quarterfinals before being handed his first loss against Nino Bonaccorsi by way of a 5–3 decision.[29] Allred's season would end in a 1–0 blood round loss to Jacob Warner, one win away from gaining All-American status.[30] Allred finished his redshirt freshman season with a 28–7 record.

2023–2024

[edit]

Allred beat freshman Dominic Thebeau in Nebraska's wrestle-offs to become the Cornhuskers starter.[31] Nebraska began the 2023–24 season against North Dakota State, where Allred would pick up a 20–4 tech fall victory over Spencer Mooberry.[32] During the 2023 Navy Classic, Allred went 4–1 to finish second in the tournament.[33] On December 16, Nebraska took on South Dakota State.[34] Allred was sent out to face Luke Rasmussen in the 285-pound matchup. During the first period, Allred would hit his head on Rasmussen's knee, sending him into concussion protocol, and forcing him to medically forfeit out of the match.[35] Allred ended the dual season against Arizona State's Jacob Meissner, winning via tech fall, his seventh of the season.[36] During the 2024 Big Ten Wrestling Championships, Allred made it to the semifinals before matching up against No. 1 ranked Aaron Brooks. Brooks defeated Allred by major decision, sending him to the consolation semifinal round to face Luke Geog.[37] Against Geog, Allred scored a takedown in the second period, appearing to unintentionally injury Geog's leg in the process. Allred was given the win via injury default.[38] Allred would then win the third-place match against Jaxon Smith, automatically qualifying him for the 2024 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.[39] Allred would reach the quarterfinals again before losing his match against Trent Hidlay by major decision.[40] He would then lose to Jacob Cardenas in the blood round to finish one win away from gaining All-American status for the second straight year.[41] Allred finished his sophomore season with a 26–8 record.

2024–2025

[edit]

Before the start of the 2024–25 season, Allred moved down to 184 pounds.[42] In Nebraska's wrestle-offs, Allred pinned true freshman Marco Christiansen in the first period, earning a starting spot.[43] In his 184-pound debut, Allred defeated Utah Valley's Caleb Uhlenhopp 11–7.[44]

Freestyle career

[edit]

Age-group

[edit]

In 2016, Allred began his freestyle wrestling career when he won the triple crown at the ISWA State Finals as a 175-pound schoolboy and then repeated as a 170-pound cadet in 2017.[45] He also won both the Warren Central Freestyle and Greco Open and the Grizzly Ironman in 2016.[46][47][48] In 2017, he also won the Apache Freestyle and Greco Open.[49][50]

After his sophomore year of high school, Allred returned to wrestling freestyle events when he won gold at the 2019 FloNationals Pan American Team Trials as a 92 kg cadet while also earning bronze at the 2019 UWW Cadet World Team Trials.[51]

In 2022, Allred began competing in junior-level competitions. He won silver at the 2022 US Open and was runner-up in the World Team Trials the same year.

Senior and U23

[edit]

2020

[edit]

Allred made his senior debut when he competed in the 2020 US Senior Nationals.[52] He would lose to Scottie Boykin and Nick Reenan.

2023

[edit]

In 2023, Allred returned to the senior level competing in the 2023 US Open National Championships.[53] He would win his first senior match when he beat Morgan Smith by decision, 8–2. Allred finished the competition in fourth place, losing the third-place match to Timothy Dudley.[54] Allred would also compete in the 2023 US U23 Nationals.[55] After three straight wins via tech falls against Kael Wisler, Kalob Runyon, and Evan Bockman, Allred would be sent the consolation bracket by Luke Surber. Allred then forfeited out of the rest of the tournament to finish in sixth place.[56]
