The new (left) and original (right) City of San Francisco trains, here noted as the first and second sections, respectively, are ready for passengers to board at Oakland Pier Terminal station for the new train's inauguration on January 2, 1938. The route was a joint operation of Southern Pacific, Union Pacific and Chicago and North Western until 1955; the eastern portion was then shifted to the Milwaukee Road and the route continued to operate until 1971.
