Pir Syed Mohammad Yaqoob Shah (Urdu: پیر سید محمد یقوب شاہ) was a Pakistani Member of the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab. He was a renowned spiritual leader, religious scholar and one of the leading members of the Sunni Islam community in the Gujrat and Mandi Bahauddin regions of Pakistan. He was elected as Member of Provincial Assembly (MPA) in the 1990 Pakistani general election, but passed away shortly in 1991. His elder son, Pir Syed Muhammad Binyamin Rizvi was elected in the by-elections held to fill the vacant seat.[1]
History
[edit]Born in Phalia, Pir Syed Mohammad Yaqoob Shah was known to have a strong demeanor & spiritual personality. His Waqiya e Karbla (The Battle of Karbala) speech became quite popular and was heard by millions around the country. Besides religious affairs, he was also involved in politics. He contested and won in the general elections of 1990 and became Member of the Provincial Assembly in his constituency of PP-99 in Phalia as a candidate of PML. During his tenure, he was also selected as Advisor to Punjab Chief Minister Ghulam Haider Wyne and later, was named as a part of Wyne's cabinet.
Family
[edit]Pir Syed Yaqoob Shah had two sons continuing his political legacy. His elder son's name was Late, Pir Syed Muhammad Binyamin Rizvi. Binyamin had various accomplishments throughout his political career. He was a Former Member of the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab, a Former Minister and also the President of PML(N) Punjab. Pir Binyamin Rizvi was brutally shot and murdered, along with his driver and bodyguard by unknown gunmen near the New Campus bridge in Lahore on 24th June 2004. Pir Yaqoob Shah’s younger son is named Syed Tariq Yaqoob Rizvi who is currently a member of (PML-N). He was also the Vice President of (PML-N) and was elected the MPA in 2013 general elections.
Legacy
[edit]- Phalia college was renamed after his death to Peer Yaqoob Shah Degree College Phalia.
- Pilot Secondary School's cricket ground was renamed to his name after his death.
