Miejska Górka [ˈmʲɛi̯ska ˈɡurka] is a town in Rawicz County, Greater Poland Voivodeship, Poland.[2] With 3,190 inhabitants (2010), it lies approximately 9 kilometres (6 mi) north-east of Rawicz and 83 km (52 mi) south of the regional capital Poznań.

History

[edit]

Miejska Górka was granted town rights before 1406. It was a private town, administratively located in the Kościan County in the Poznań Voivodeship in the Greater Poland Province of the Kingdom of Poland.[3]

Following the joint German-Soviet invasion of Poland, which started World War II in September 1939, Miejska Górka was occupied by Germany until 1945. The occupiers operated a subcamp of the Nazi prison in Rawicz, dedicated to prisoners suffering from tuberculosis.[4] On 22 May 1941, the Germans perpetrated a public execution of 25 Poles in the town (see Nazi crimes against the Polish nation).[5] The command of the Miejscowa Organizacja Podziemna Polish resistance organization was operating in Miejska Górka, and eventually became part of the larger Home Army in 1944.[6]
