List of fictional characters with disabilities
This is a list of fictional characters with disabilities in various mediums, including novels, comics, television, and movies. A disability may be readily visible, or invisible in nature. Some examples of invisible disabilities include intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, mental disorders, asthma, epilepsy, allergies, migraines, arthritis, and chronic fatigue syndrome.[1] There are many different causes of disability that often affect basic activities of daily living, such as eating, dressing, transferring, and maintaining personal hygiene; or advanced activities of daily living such as shopping, food preparation, driving, or working. However, causes of disability are usually determined by a person's capability to perform the activities of daily life.
Due to the number of entries, this page does not include autistic fictional characters.
The names can be organized using any of the filters in the table heading. For Film and TV there is an additional column identifies if the actor is disabled or not.

Cripping-up on screen and its impact on authentic characterisation
[edit]Cripping-up is the act of casting an actor without a visible disability into a screen or theatre role which is scripted as having visible disability, or is about an historical figure who is know to have had a disability. This does not include disabled actors being cast in roles with different conditions to their own where the character's disability has been transposed in the script to the condition of a specific actor. This is can happen because the "lived experience" of visible disability and ableism is the core idea rather than literal portrayal of a specific condition.[31][32]
For the characters on screen this is an additional dimension to their authenticity, as if they are played by non-disabled then they are subject to, "the cure of the curtain call" i.e. the moment when a non-disabled performer is revealed as such after portraying a disabled character.[32]
Best practice for authentic casting means that if a condition is core to storyline then casting is as close as possible with Deaf actors playing Deaf roles, the same for actors with Neurodivergence, Vision Impairment, Physical Disabilities, Wheelchair Users, Limb Differences, Short Stature or conditions such as Cerebral Palsy or Downs Syndrome.
