Ralph Fiennes is an English actor of stage and screen who has received a British Academy Film Award and a Tony Award as well as nominations for three Academy Awards , a Primetime Emmy Award , seven Golden Globe Awards , and four Screen Actors Guild Awards .
Fiennes won acclaim for his portrayal of Amon Göth in the Steven Spielberg directed Holocaust drama Schindler's List (1993) for which he earned the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role as well as nominations for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture . For playing László Almásy in Anthony Minghella 's romantic war drama The English Patient (1996), he received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor as well as for the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role , the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama , and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role .
He was also BAFTA-nominated for the romance The End of the Affair (1999), the thriller The Constant Gardener (2005), and the comedy The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014). He also was nominated for the Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for Coriolanus (2011). He received Golden Globe-nominations for his roles as William Cavendish in the period drama The Duchess (2008), a charming concierge in the comedy The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), a dangerous chef in the dark comedy The Menu (2022), and a Cardinal in the drama Conclave (2024).
On television, he portrayed an Irish butler Bernard Lafferty in the HBO movie Bernard and Doris (2006) for which he was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie , the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film , and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Miniseries or Television Movie .
On stage, he received the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for playing the title role in a revival of the William Shakespeare tragedy Hamlet (1995). He was further Tony-nominated for playing a faith healer in the Brian Friel play Faith Healer (2006).
