Khadaan is the soundtrack album, composed by Rathijit Bhattyacharya, Nilayan Chatterjee and Savvy to the 2024 Bengali film of the same name, directed by Soojit Rino Dutta starring Dev, Jisshu Sengupta, Barkha Bisht, Idhika Paul and Anirban Chakrabarti in lead roles. The film is produced by Dev and Nispal Singh under the respective banners of Dev Entertainment Ventures and Surinder Films.
The soundtrack features eight songs with lyrics penned by Nilayan Chatterjee himself in his compositions, while Ritam Sen wrote for Rathijit Bhattyacharya and Savvy. The album preceded with four singles—"Rajar Raja", "Haye Re Biye", "Kishori" and "Baap Eseche"—before its release, while the remaining songs "Radharani", "Royal Fighter", "Dhinak Na Tin" and "Phiraiyya Dao" along with the full audio jukebox was released on 18 December 2024.
The music received positive reception from critics and audience, and set several streaming records, with two of the songs: "Haye Re Biye" and "Kishori" set records for the most-viewed Indian Bengali song within 24 hours.[1]
Background
[edit]Soojit Rino Dutta described the music for Khadaan as "multi-genre" and "versatile" in an interview to Anandabazar Patrika.[2] When the film was announced on 1 January 2024, Nilayan Chatterjee was revealed to be associated with the film as its solo composer in his fourth collaboration with Dev after Kishmish (2022), Kachher Manush (2022) and Bagha Jatin (2023),[3][4] while Rathijit Bhattyacharya also came on the board marking his third film as a composer after Projapoti (2022) and Pradhan (2023). As a guest composer, Savvy was included in the team in April 2024.
The soundtrack accompanied traditional and electronic instrumentation. According to Rathijit Bhattyacharya, the female singers perform the songs in lower octaves, while the male singers perform it in higher notes, specifically in the song "Kishori".
Production
[edit]"Rajar Raja" was the first to be released from the album, on 12 November 2024.[5][6] It was composed by Savvy and sung by Dev Arijit with lyrics written by Ritam Sen.[7] The music video portrays the frenzy of people and devotees during the worship of Lord Shiva.[8] It highlights Bengali culture, through Dev's dance, the worship of a Shiva idol built on the basis of Nataraja.[9][10] It also marked Dev in a dance song after a decade of films including no dance numbers.[11][12]
The second song "Haye Re Biye" composed and penned by Nilayan Chatterjee, was originally was the first song recorded for the film, and had a release on 22 November 2024.[13] It was recorded and mixed at TAG Institute, Mumbai.[14] Initially, the song was composed with dummy lyrics and Sudip Nandy, one of the singers of the song, recorded the patch.[15] Nilayan Chatterjee, the composer and lyricist of the song worked on the lyricsm, in receipt of his vocals. In the song, Abhijeet Bhattacharya lend his voice for Dev, reuniting with him 6 years after Hoichoi Unlimited (2018).[16] Nilayan Chatterjee revealed that he wanted to bring back the nostalgia of the songs from Dev's previous films, where Abhijeet Bhattacharya did playbacks for Dev and created magic through his voice.[17] June Banerjee, the female singer of the song, made her comeback through the film as a singer, 11 years after the 2013 film Loveria. Gethin John and Hafod Mastering did the mastering of the song in UK.
"Kishori", the third song in the album was released on 5 December 2024, which was composed by Rathijit Bhattyacharya and written by Ritam Sen. The song was performed by Bhattyacharya himself along with Antara Mitra.[18] The song is picturized on the romantic relationship between Madhu (Dev) and his love interest Latika (Idhika).
On 12 December 2024, the song "Baap Eseche", which was showcased in the film's pre-trailer was released as the album's fourth single. Nilayan Chatterjee wrote and composed the track, sung by Ishan Mitra. There was a line in the song, "Mass awbotaarey Superstar jegechhe..." (The superstar has awakened in mass avatar), which addresses Dev's comeback in a mainstream film after a long time. The lyrics also had referenced the Jeet Gannguli composition "Challenge Nibi Na Saala" from the film Challenge (2009). It served as a promotional track for the film. In the film, the song appears in the end credits sequence.
The remaining songs "Radharani", "Royal Fighter" , "Dhinak Na Tin" and "Phiraiyya Dao" along with the full audio jukebox was released on 18 December 2024.
Music video
[edit]The songs were choreographed by D. Shankaraiyaa alias Shanker Master and Debraj Ghoshal. The track "Kishori" was shot in a coal mine of Asansol during the second schedule of the film held in March 2024 with 20 dancers, among which were 10 male and female dancers. "Radharani" featuring Jisshu Sengupta was shot from 19 July to 22 July 2024, during the third schedule of the film. At the same month, the song "Haye Re Biye" featuring Dev, Jisshu, Barkha Bisht[19][20] and Sneha Bose was filmed under Shankaraiyaa's supervised choreography. In the same schedule, he choreographed the song "Rajar Raja", which was shot on 28 September 2024.[21] It was filmed at Baranagar, constructing a special set of a village fair.[22] Along with 200 dancers, Dev danced to this song on the sand in 42 degree scorching heat.[23][24]
"Baap Eseche", the promotional track of the film, was shot in early November 2024, while the filming had been wrapped up on 1 October 2024. Choreographed by Debraj Ghoshal, the song featured Dev, along with 250 dancers.
Release
[edit]The soundtrack to Khadaan was released at a music launch and fan experience event held on 18 December 2024 at South City Mall in Kolkata.[25] The event saw the attendance of Dev and Jisshu Sengupta, where the latter had performed "Radharani". The same day, the soundtrack was released to music streaming platforms. Subhasmita Kanji of Hindustan Times, described the afforementioned track as one of the best classical composition designed as a Kirtan and addressed Rathijit Bhattyacharya as the worthy successor of Jeet Gannguli.[26]
