A history of John Guest working collaboratory with the senior officer of the College of Arms

John worked collaboratory with senior officers of the College of Arms since 2018. Initially, with Sir Thomas Woodcock (1951-) [4] who served as Garter Principal King of Arms at the College of Arms from 2010 to 2021 and Mr Grant Bavister, Officer in Waiting. It is they who verified the authenticity of a family pedigree chart that John Guest inherited from his maternal grandfather, Augustus Hallifax Hay (1910-1985). This led to a comprehensive family records restoration project for John Lindsay Robert Guest's (1960-) paternal and maternal heritage, and for the maternal heritage he shared with his cousins by degree, renowned former international cricketer, Dennis Keith Lillee (1949-) AM, MBE [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] and Darren John Halifax (1965-), BA [10] [11] [12].

Guest was able to trace his and Lillee and Halifax's heritage along their shared bloodlines to and beyond the Norman Conquest. First records were restored for them tying them to their shared 5th great grandfather Reverend Robert Hallifax (1761-1838), M.A. of Magdalen College, Oxford. This Robert Hallifax was the most recent of six of their lineal ancestors stepped out in the College of Arms Hallifax Pedigree, Transcript, Ms 7D14/45, last updated with the College on the 16th December, 1788 [13].

This Reverend Robert Hallifax (1761-1838) marked clearly near the bottom of the chart submitted below, was formerly a Demi of Magdalen College, Oxford, and for fifty-three years the Vicar of Standish with Hardwicke, Gloucstershire. He moved to Standish from Berkshire, by invitation by his older 1st cousin (citations needed) [14], Bishop Samuel Hallifax (1733-1793) [15]. Robert was married to Guest, Lillee and Halifax's 5th great grandmother, Sarah Sentence, on the 30th April 1782 [16].

At the top of the chart submitted below, the reader is directed to the first of Guest, Lillee and Halifax's lineal ancestors entered into the Hallifax family pedigree, Coll. Arm. Transcript, Ms 7D14/45. His name is Robert Waterhouse (1586-1634), Rector of Springthorpe in the County of Lincoln, and he was the first in the family to take the name Hallifax. He is John Guest, Dennis Lillee and Darren Hallifax's confirmed 10th great grandfather. The same record, Ms 7D14/45 shows Robert married Margaret Benson, the daughter of Thomas Benson.

Unravalled by Guest (2022, 2023 and 2024) was the identity of Robert's parents, namely Robert Waterhouse (1544-1598), MP (citations needed) and his wife, Jane Waterhouse (c1550-aft 1607), nee Waterton (citations needed). They held the manor of Shibden Hall, Halifax, West Yorkshire (citations needed).

Robert's father, Robert Waterhouse (1544-1598), MP, and Lord of the Manor, Shibden Hall, is confirmed to be descended from Sir Gilbert Waterhouse, or "Ab Aquae, Domo, Knt" and his wife Isabella Waterhouse, daughter of Sir Richard de Longvale, the co-heir, of her brother, Sir John de Longvale, Knt [17] [18] [19]. It is Gilbert and Isabella who now recognised are the earliest patrilineal ancestors enjoyed by Robert Waterhouse (1544-1598), MP of Shibden Hall [20] supported by authentic genealogical records the Crown relies [21] [22].

The longest of Guest, Lillee and Halifax's verifiable bloodlines

Waterhouse (Hallifax) bloodline

Amongst the deepest amongst all of Guest, Lillee and Halifax's shared ancient bloodlines flowing into the Hallifax pedigree chart Ms 7D14/45 verified by the College of Arms and flowing first to their 10th great grandfather, Robert Waterhouse (1586-1634), Rector of Springthorpe, first to take the name Hallifax, is the Waterton bloodline. Robert inherited it from his mother Jane Waterhouse (c1550-aft 1607) daughter of Thomas Waterton (1525-1575) and Beatrice (Beatrix) Restwold. Jane's patrilineal "Waterton" bloodline is well settled in history and confirmed by multiple credible sources (Burke 1838; Walker 1931), and recently further verified by the College of Arms on the 22nd January 2024 [23] .

Waterton and subsequent aristocratic and dynastic bloodlines

Jane is a direct descendent of Norman d'Areci, who accompanied William the Conqueror. His son acquired land in Normandy, England and he, Norman d'Areci took the name Normand de Normandy. His son, Reiner de Normandy, brother of Ralph de Normandy was the first to take the name Waterton. Jane's patrilineal ancestors are stepped out in circumspect by both John Burke (1838) and Dr J.W. Walker (1931) making doubtless Jane Waterhouse (c1550-aft 1607) of her patrilineal ancestry. Dr J.W. Walker's (1931) evidence based account details thoroughly all patrilineal ancestors standing between her and Norman d"Areci (Citation required).

Confirmed by Burke (1838) and Dr J.W. Walker (1931) is the marriage union between her patrilineal ancestor Sir Thomas Waterton and Muriel Waterton, nee Leke (Leek) is the first source of Jane's dynastic bloodline flowing to her from Murial, a direct descendent of Edward I and Eleanor Castille.

Further confirmed by Walker is the marriage union of Jane Waterhouse (c1550- aft 1607), nee Waterton's lineal ancestors found on the Waterton-de Burgh bloodline, Mary de Burgh (1331-1361), nee de Grey, first wife of Sir John de Burgh. Mary is the daughter of Roger de Grey and Elizabeth de Grey, nee de Hastings, daughter of XXXX-XXXXX.

It is Elizabeth's mother, Isaballea de hastings, nee de Valence who is the gateway ancestor enjoyed by Guest, Lillee and Halifax to many dynastic lineal ancestors well known to the Crown by long established British, Irish and European royal history, and the Royal Family.

Petition for Succession, Hallifax Family History, Earldom of Oxford, 1st Creation, December 1066, 15th February, 2023

In 2023, Guest, Lillee and Halifax presented to His Royal Highness, King Charles III, the "Petition for Succession, Hallifax Family History, Earldom of Oxford, 1st Creation, December 1066, 15th February, 2023" [24]. The petition took the form of a book, privately held (Privately held by the Crown and the Guest, Lillee and Halifax family). The Crown's review of all of its content, took 12 months to complete, and on the 22nd January 2024, J.L.R Guest, Esq., D.J. Halifax, Esq. and D.K. Lillee, esq. [AM, MBE] received verification of their line of descent [25] from Queen Margaret of Scotland (1045-1093) and King Malcolm of Scotland (1031-1093) and subsequently, Edgar the Atheling (c1051- c1125), Margaret's brother was Guest, Lillee and Halifax's ancient, ancestral great uncle.

The Crown stopped short of declaring the creation of Edgar the Atheling's, Earldom of Oxford, 1066 by William I, which was requested by the Petitioners; with succession to Edgar's title subsequently requested to go to co-petitioner, Darren Halifax turned down by the Crown, on the grounds that whilst Guest was able to prove his and cousins descent from Queen Margaret (1045-1093) and Malcolm III (1031-1093) of Scotland, and thereby Margaret's borther Edgar the Atheling was the petitioners ancient, ancestral, great uncle, the verified descent was "but one isolated line of descent only". Meaning that in context of a succession claim by Darren Halifax, Guest would need to research all other lines not Hallifax, out there, so to speak.

Even then, if Guest was to embark on this otherwise insumountable task, and complete the evidence-based study, to the standard he demonstrated to the Crown in the 2023 Petition, [26] he would then need to show proof that family lines outside of the Hallifax family line, he found that were more senior than the Hallifax line, were in facct extinct. Further, he would have to show the Hallifax line is left clear as the senior line [27]. In short, any attempt to embark on such a study would amount to an act in futility.

On the 1st February 2024, Guest was given a standing invitation by the examiner of the 2023 Petition, in his capacity as advisor to King Charles III to make a "Supplemental Petition", to His Majesty. Whereby the examiner said:

, should Guest " caity as acting invited to The Crown's expert examiner who considered Guest's research and authorship contributions to construct the 2023 Petition in which their was no template in the history of Englands peerage to follow, to be "remarkable research" [28]. Sufficiently so, as it appears, not only were Guest, Lillee and Halifax's shared dynastic bloodlines, researched and authored by Guest, left uncontested by the examiner advising the Crown [29], the examiner, standing in the place of King Charles III, invited Guest as researcher, and him and his co-petitioners, as known descendents of Edgar the Atheling's sister, Queen Margaret (1045-1093) and King Malcolm of Scotland (1031-1093) to submit a "Supplemental Petition" if Guest could uncover fresh evidence pre-dating tied to the State Document, Domesday Book, 1086, showing Edgar was made Earl by William I, this may be seen by the Crown as compelling.

Guest found what he believed to be further corroborating evidence for the actual creation of Edgar the Atheling as Earl by William I including, Edgar as Earl in Domesday Book, 1086.

Letter of expert opinion

Prudence dictated Guest consult a world expert prior to him and his co-petitioner's Dennis Lillee and Darren Halifax making their final submission to the Crown in the form of the Supplementary Petition [30]. Professor Tom Licence, MA, MPhil, PhD, FHEA, FRHistS, FSA, Professor of Medieval History, University of East Anglia, Senior Research Fellow, Magdalene College, Cambridge agreed to review the draft Supplementary Petition and give his expert opinion on whether the petitioners' had made their evidence-based case [31]. Given the strength of the evidence before him, Professor Licence, determined:

"In conclusion I find in favour of the petitioners statement, that on the balance of probabilities, Edgar the Atheling, was created Earl by William I ..." [32] [33] [34] [35].

On the 24th September 2024, the petitioners, Guest, Lillee and Halifax submitted the Supplementary Petition to the Head of the Crown Office, Deputy Clerk of the Crown Chancery, Registrar of the Peerage [36].

The subject matter is presently under the consideration by the Crown and the petitioners will be satisfied with any consideration given by the Crown.Earliest recorded Guest patrilineal ancestors enjoyed by the researcher, John Guest

Volume I, shows using an unbroken chain of genealogical continuity records the Crown relies [21] [22], his descent from his 11th great grandparents, Gyles Guest (-1557) and Alice Guest (-1581), nee Styles of Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire England [37]. Alice is the daughter of Cheltenham Baliff, Richard Styles [38] [39].

Most ancient maternal bloodlines shared by John Guest, Dennis Lillee and Darren Halifax

John Guest shares his most ancient ancestry along with his relatives Dennis Keith Lillee (1949-) OA, MBE [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] and Darren John Halifax (1965-), BA [10] [11] [12]. The College of Arms first verified their direct descent from their 10th great grandparents listed below down to their shared 5th great grandfather Reverend Robert Hallifax (1761-1838). M.A. of Magdalen College, Oxford (Transcript of Coll. Arm Ms 7D14/45):

The family members marked prominantly above, are John Guest, Dennis Lillee and Darren Halifax's lineal ancestors.
The family members marked prominantly above, are John Guest, Dennis Lillee and Darren Halifax's lineal ancestors.

An overview of Guest's maternal heritage research

The witness to Guest, Lillee and Halifax's family pedigree Ms &D14/45, shown above, was Ralph Bigland. He was found to be the certain, "Sir Ralph Bigland (1757-1838)" [40]; and he should not to be confused with his maternal uncle of the same name, who also held herald appointment at the College of Arms [41]. In 1831, Bigland rose to the most senior office at the College of Arms, Garter Principal, King of Arms [42].

The two family members declaring the accuracy of the Hallifax family pedigree Ms 7D14/45 wih their declarations witnessed by Sir Ralph Bigland, namely John Hallifax of Springthorpe (1694-), was a clockmaker of Barnsley. He married wife Anna, daughter of Thomas Archdale of Pilay in the County of York [43]; and it is they who are the parents of Sir Thomas Hallifax (1722-1789) MP and former Lord Mayor of London [44] [45].

John's cousin, Robert Hallifax (1735-1810), M.D. of London, was the other family member submitting the Hallifax family 1586-1788 to the College of Arms on the 16th December 1788. Robert was then, physician to His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales and also to the Royal Household [46] [47] [48].

The trustworthiness of this record Ms 7D14/45 was confirmed by Guest in 2018, when recently retired Garter Principal, King of Arms, Sir Thomas Woodcock. Woodcock, confirmed that the Transcript of the College of Arms, Ms 7D14/45, which passed down to John Guest by his maternal grandfather, Augustus Hallifax Hay (1910-1985) was authentic.
