Gutidara (Bengali: গুটিদাড়া) is a traditional rural game of Bangladesh. It is a team sport, played with round balls (commonly known as Guti) are thrown out of bounds by hitting with small sticks, to score points. It is a traditional game of Brahmanbaria District. In this district there is a tradition of organizing Gutidaara game between the seniors and the youth.[1] In almost every villages of the district Gutidaara is played after harvesting.[2]
Gameplay
[edit]Gutidara is played by two teams. There are 11 players on each team.[1] It is usually played in the field after harvest.[3] The boundaries of the field are determined by mutual understanding of the players. For 30 minutes, each team tries to hit the Guti out of bounds with a bamboo stick. The players of the opposite team try to catch the Guti. Every catch deducts the opponent's points. If any of the opposing team fails to take it while crossing the boundary, hitting team earns points. The team with the most points is declared the winner.[4]
There are two referees to officiate the game. The opportunity to throw pieces is determined by coin toss.[2]
Equipments
[edit]The two main tools of the game are a ball, locally known as Guti, made from water buffalo's horns, and a one-and-a-half-cubit-long stick made of bamboo. Pieces made from buffalo horns are currently scarce, and so the game is often played with machine-made artificial pieces.[1]
Traditions
[edit]Gutidara is prevalent in Brahmanbaria district. Though the game is not played in every part of Bangladesh, it is considered a national tradition. Under the initiative of the local literary academy in Brahmanbaria, there is a tradition of organizing gutidara matches among the young and old every year in Sherpur, within the municipal area of the Brahmanbaria.[5] In addition to the annual competition, players go to different places including Shahbazpur, Sarail of the district to participate in the competition.[4]
